I am from northern Ohio. I am going to be in the Hartley Bay area of the French River for the first time this year. I am wondering what to expect as far as bugs go. The trip dates are June 14th-19th.

Mosquitos and black flies. Last year I was near the area but not exactly at the French, and the mosquitoes weren't bad. There are also ticks, although I'm not sure of their range.

What about quantity? haha I am taking some kids up for a camping/fishing trip and I want to make sure they know what to expect.

It varies per year. 10 years ago you would have a mouthful just from yawning, and as I've mentioned last year the mosquitos were barely noticeable. To be honest we are having some pretty crazy weather atm, and since I'm not entomologist I'm not sure about the current state. Try calling in to a local lodge/business to know the current state and how bad they think they'll get. Also, I don't mind mosquitos anymore after I've discovered the wonders of the mesh that goes over your face.

Thanks for the info! Calling is a good idea. I was thinking about the net as well. I think i can get one for $6 or so.

I was on ther Upper French last year around June 6th. Bugs didn't bite but they were out in hordes. Bug nets essential.

I know this is a bit pricey, but ThermaCELL really works. It's a bit pricey, but worth every cent. You just strap it near where you are and turn it on. Amazing results. Lots of links on UTUBE.
