Steelhead and Salmon forum rules

  • Specific Spots: Disclosing the presence of fish in a specific pool, upstream from the mouth of any river or tributary is not permitted in the publicly viewable general discussion forum. For example, you can say "I had a great day fishing yesterday on Wilmot Creek", but we do not encourage members to say "The fish are stacked up in the pool at the CNR bridge". The latter statement should be relegated to the Tier 1 and Tier 2 reports sections, away from public view.
  • Lining Debate: "Lining", "snagging" or "flossing" fish is a hot-button topic that often ruins otherwise productive conversations. In order to keep the general discussion forum clean, helpful and productive, it is the policy of OFF that any and all "lining" conversation/debate be conducted in the "Salmonid Insanity" sub-forum.
  • Forum Etiquette: Simple - Be polite, keep it civil. All personal attacks, insults, inflammatory remarks, threats, racist remarks, trolling and otherwise rude and/or immature behaviour are strictly forbidden and will be met with disciplinary action up to and including permanent banning.

If you don't want to miss the next big salmon run, here is a little insight that may help take some of the mystery out of the timing aspect...

Goodguy 2201 first reported that salmon were "coming in like crazy" at Port Hope on August 16th in this post here: http://www.ontariofi...6s0.html#p19958

We didn't hear from him again until a week later when he reported on August 23rd that "the full run has started today around 4 :30 am" in the post here: http://www.ontariofi...s30.html#p20118

Now look at the hydrometric data for the Ganaraska river for that time period:

Now, for those of you interested in hitting the next run at Port Credit, look at this:

The next significant rainfall may trigger a good run of salmon based on looking at the recent hydrometric data for the Credit River.

I'll be down at the credit tonight and tomorrow morning. And then off to Florida tomorrow.

Question:
So after a heavy rain fall seems to be a good time. But right after the rIn isn't too good isnc't it? Is it better to wait a day or so after the rain for the dirty water to calm down and clear up a bit?
So what i am asking is if I should wait for any other condition after the rain? River fishers like to wait few days for water to clear up, right?
I've always wondered that for pier fishing. I am sure salmons are just staging out of casting range.

The river guys wait a day or two (depending on the river) because they aren't skilled enough at fishing "blown" rivers. The fact is, if you know how to fish dirty water, you'll not only have the river to yourself, but you can catch a lot of fish from what I've heard from some of the more expert steelhead guys... Huge, bright roebags being the ticket.

As for pier fishing, I've been at Port Credit during the rain and had amazing days, dirty water and all. The best situation is when the mud-line edges are accessible. - If you wait for the water to clear up after a rain, most of the fish will have gone up the river and you miss the party at the pier.

Not sure exactly what conditions you have experienced but...

from my personal experience at mouth of credit, I have never seen a mud-line edge that I can say that is the mudline.

credit is more... wide spread out.

Also , during muddier water, do you let your lure go as deep as you have confidence in that you won't snag the bottom?

I know what you mean. There's not always the type of "mudline" I'm referring to at Port Credit... It usually happens when the chocolate milk starts flowing.

When I say "edge" I'm not necessarily describing a razor edge drawn with a ruler, with completely muddy water on one side and completely clear water on the other... it's more like a region where the water transitions from muddy to clear... Some days, especially during and just after a good rain, the "mudline" can be more defined. That's the kind of mudline I'm talking about. The point is, I've had success when I've been able to cast to a zone where the water is clear, adjacent to the chocolate milk.

I don't usually fish my lures too deep regardless.
