Met a seasoned fisherman one day in the summer and he was waiting for his worms to thaw. Yep, he told that he keeps worms by freezing them. Anyone else do this?

What happens to worms in the winter? Do they go below the frost line( a big dig) or do they freeze?

The wonders of nature.

Yes worms do live below the frost line in the winter. Where I used to live this past summer was a corner store that sold worms. Twice I bought worms this year and both times they were shriveled and dead, I took them back and complained. After that the owner kept telling me to take worms from the right side of the fridge as he had taken them out of the freezer that morning. Well the worms from the right side of the fridge were also shriveled and dead. Personally I don't think worms like to be frozen, nor do they survive it.
Just my experience this past year. Frost line is generally 4 feet in S. Ontario.

Worms will " ball up " when cold to keep moisture intact , but when freezing occurs ... they head way down in the earth , as already mentioned . My worms from last month are out in the garage in a styrofoam cooler and I would guess most will be frozen and there-fore dead . I wouldn't want to wait for frozen worms to thaw because the reeking stink would make you lose your lunch , enough said.

The river is forever moving and always changing .
It calms me and challenges me . It keeps me aware of everything around me .
As I sit at home waiting away the cold days of winter , a warm breeze blows my way .
A mild spell is coming ... and the river ... it calls to me ...
................................................
It calls to me softly ... whispering ... " GET YOUR ASS DOWN HERE , IT'S STEELY TIME !!! "

a tip for collecting your own worms.......mustard powder and water mix and shake it up in a 2L bottle then dump on moist ground where you see their castings.........wait a few minutes and bingo bango worms will come to the surface. i dont use them much any more as i usually opt for less messy easier to keep plastic versions but ALL fish wil take a worm presented the right way extremely versatile bait, lethal on summer waleyes dragged on a harness when its too windy to jig effectively.

float goes down......rod goes up!!!

I've tried the mustard and water mixture. It works well during the day time even. I usually collect mine after dark using a flashlight to find them on a damp lawn.
