General question for those who might happen to know:

Have to go to a conference in Washington DC in March--does anyone have any experience fishing that area at this time...

Licenses and Regulations

Within the District of Columbia, fishing licensesare required for anglers age 16 and older, except on weekend days on either endof National Fishing and Boating Week in June. Striped bass season opens May 16and runs through December 31. Anglers are limited to two stripers per day, which must be 18 inches minimum in length. Only one of the two fish may belonger than 28 inches.

FISHING, CRABBING ANDSHELLFISHING
THE TIDAL POTOMAC
The tidal Potomac Riveroffers some of the finest fishing, crabbing and shellfishing on the Atlanticcoast. The estuary runs from the tidal fresh waters of Washington, DC to themid-range salinities of the Chesapeake Bay at Point Lookout, Maryland and SmithPoint, Virginia.

The Potomac not onlyserves as a very fine "fishing hole", it also serves as the stateboundary line between Maryland and Virginia, and is the home of two otherpolitical jurisdictions, the District of Columbia and the Potomac RiverFisheries Commission. The Potomac River Fisheries Commission is a Maryland andVirginia bi-state Commission, which regulates all fishing on the tidal mainstemof the Potomac between Washington, DC and the Chesapeake Bay, exclusive of thetributaries on either side of the river.

Each of these fourjurisdictions has the authority to, and does, publish and enforce rules, regulations and laws dealing with such fishing matters as seasons, size limits, creel limits and licensing requirements. Knowing where you are fishing isimportant because licensing requirements, season and limits can be, andsometimes are, quite different. It is your responsibility to know what the lawsare where you are fishing, crabbing or oystering.

The Potomac RiverFisheries Commission, in cooperation with the State of Maryland, Commonwealthof Virginia and the District of Columbia, maintains a system of day markers atthe mouths of the various creeks, bays and inlets, which are tributary to thePotomac. On several of the larger tributaries, intermediate spar or can buoysare maintained.

The day markers consistof a 4-foot by 4-foot sign mounted on a steel piling. They are white with anorange border and black lettering. They are individually numbered and letteredand are generally located in shoal water near the headlands of the tributaries. This drawing may be useful in helping you decide where you are fishing!
