I have been thinking about buying a sonar for iceshing but have not much clue as what unit to purchase. Prefer somethign that doubles for boat fishing (if/when I get a boat) and not above $400. Any input is appreciated

ah! Come on you stupid fish, take the bait! Don't make me come down there! [HJS]

I bought the Hummingbird 586 dual beam last fall for summer fishing and I love it. I now use it for my ice fishing as I bought the flasher transducer and it has a built in flasher mode. Don't know how I fish without it. You can see my setup here.

and for ice fishing

Any decent sonar will work, just make sure you're not using fish ID. I have a hard time fishing without it too, once you learn how to play with all your settings, and learn to read what fish are doing, hard water will be that much easier. I love mine, it's an older hummingbird, and I know what fish are doing on it, picking up chum cruising off to the side, chasing my bait or laying on bottom. I actually watched a laker last year rise 40 feet off bottom on my screen, looked down my hole in my hut and watched him come up and grab some chum I just threw down, realed up one of my rods and bam. Fish on.

The X67c ice machine.
On sale at Lebaron's for $245.
Then just buy the boat transducer and attach it to the boat.
Then you only have to take the head unit off in the fall for ice fishing.
It has both the graph and flasher.
