Well guys it's that time of year again and I have a little extra cash that I've managed to tuck away and I'm itching to buy myself a new float rod for the upcoming season. I currently have a Raven RV9 with a custom handle and I love it, the only problem is that since I've only been float fishing for a year or so I enjoy getting out for salmon quite often to hone in my skills. The RV9 is a great rod however I find 2 things...1) Its a bit to expensive (in my eyes) to be battling big bruises all day, I fear that I will inevitably break it while trying to learn, 2) At 13'6" it's a bit long for the smaller rivers I like to fish, and I've heard mastering the wallis is easier on a shorter rod? (more control) Maybe I'm way off and just overthinking this but any advice would be great. I would really prefer a fixed reel seat and hoping to keep it around $200 and 10-6"-12' and suggestions or should I just stick with what I've been doing and not worry so much lol

Without getting into customs-not a lot of options for a heavier float rod as far as I know. A good option would be to tie up a 7/8 wt spey blank if that's your thing.

Imo your best option for factory may be the 11.6 raven im6. I haven't fished it but a few people on floatboard have for chindogs.

As for the wallis cast. I learned quickly on a 12.9 and a 15'. Don't think it matters much

Thanks WpD, I've been trying to master it in the backyard with a just an old red/white float on the line, the neighbors must think I'm nuts but oh well, starting to get the hang of it. It just looks so good when you see people who have been doing it for years do it...like an art almost lol striving for that so I can stop wasting line with the sidecast.

I would say the im6 is a bit soft for salmon. I would suggest the rapala r-type rods, they are beefy and low cost.

The 13.6 is a wet noodle, the 11.6 is a meat stick I believe.

Hmm. Here are some suggestions. 

-Rapala R Type as NADO said. 11'6  ML 4-12 ($175) but you would be better off with something with some more power

-Rapala Classic (reel seat). 11'6 M 14-20. ($199). This is the shorter style rod you requested but a beefy medium rod, would be great to target salmon.

-Fenwick also makes a HMX (reel seat) 9'6 M for 10-20 lb line for $105.

Shimano Clarus CP rods are worth a look.  I don't believe the size of the fish matters when it comes to breaking a rod.  I've seen few rods break on "shaker".

I got a 10' streamside 2pc steelhead rod from Outdoorsman in Sarnia last yr. i think its an IM8. Was around $100

I have a 10'6" "Salmon Rod" by Streamside. It was about $110. It's classified as a float rod but its got some muscle and can be used with a centrepin or a spinning reel, and has a fixed Fuji reel seat.

I really like the Raven MXG 12' 6. Its about $150 give or take. It takes a lot of beating, and find that it handles salmon / steelhead pretty well. A good all round rod for a great price.

You won't get disappointed. Very good rod for the price. Very light. You will pretty much be carrying the weight of the reel when using this rod.

I have two of these, great for salmon and carp fishing. Mine has lifetime warranty, not sure about newer model
