Some deals on combos at Canadian Tire, the one that caught my eye is the Shimano Sienna 2500 SP Medium 2-Piece Spin Combo. 25% off for $52.49

Sry, but my advice would be save a little longer and buy really good equipment! Ive done the cheaper combo thing over & over..... To find I was never really satisfied or they broke. I now buy higher end stuff and have yet to be unsatisfied! Plus the higher end gear really does make for a nicer fishing experience! Lighter, smoother, and looks great in photos! Id go with a pfluger patriarch reel ( I have 1 and its a joy to use) and a st croix or g loomis rod. Good luck, watever you go with!

Shakespeare Uglystick 7' medium/fast rod can handle pretty much any fish out of lake ontario.

All you need is a decent reel after that.

Here's a good starting reel....$49

https://www.amazon.c...s=spinning reel

Okuma Celilo Spinning Rod Salmon / Steelhead. 9'6" http://www.lebaron.c.../okuma_rods.pdf

This may cost a bit more but this combo has gotten me fishing from pan fish to salmon. All you will need is replace the line for whatever specie you target.

I caught bass, salmon, steelhead, brown, pike, carp, rock bass fishing worms under a bobber, bottom rigged corn, casting suspending plugs for pike & bass, tossing senkos on weedlines, casting spoons for salmon or drifting roes on steels.

Still use up to this day.
