Hi all

Just a quick intro. Myself and my wife have recently relocated to Toronto from Johannesburg, South Africa.

I have been fly fishing for as long as I can remember and have fished all throughout South Africa for trout and some other indigenous species such as the smallmouth yellowfish and largemouth yellowfish.

I have already ventured out for some winter steelhead but have had no luck us yet! Tried swinging some flies with a Spey rod and some nymphing but got skunked.

Looking forward to interacting on the forum and hopefully finding some new fishing friends for a day out on the water and a beer or two sometime.

If anyone is looking for some company out on a river anytime soon let me know as I'm eager to wet a line at any opportunity!

Welcome to the forum and to the area! Happy to see more people swinging spey rods in Ontario waters! Like pump said, the steel will be in full run pretty soon and your chances of landing a few are fairly good! It's a timing thing with these fish but it seems you're on the right track and are well aware of how to target these fish so i'll let you be! lol  Drop me a message if ever you're in the Hamilton/Niagara area and would like to fish.

Welcome! Catch Yellowfish (Smallmouth and Largemouth) from S.A. is pretty high on my bucket list! I'd love to share experiences with you some day.

Welcome! Getting your first steelhead on a swung fly can be quite a challenge, but a rewarding one at that! Using nymphing methods can be very productive if you want to catch your first steelhead... If you find your way up to saugeen or Maitland rivers, these are great spey fishing rivers would be glad to swing some runs with you.

To add to what Huron said, the grand river can also be very productive at times for swinging flies in the spring and fall. Very large river however with very little holding water in the lower section so timing is key. All kinds of good swinging water below Caledonia.
