There will be something for you in the rapids.

I heard the water is up so high there this year that you cant even fish the rapids. I think that info was based on a month ago and water levels have been dropping so its possible it is better now.

Thx for the info. I'm sure they are around. The temperature drop does trigger their run also, so yeah, conditions seems favourable now. Having said that, I get one trip and 1 chance this year to Algoma (and I havent fished salmon in 7 yrs), so I'd really appeciate any update from the locals please.

You'd be more likely to find someone in the know on this topic at Greybruceoutdoors.

The water is all based off of the dam's at the head of the rapids. It can fluctuate up to I believe 10ft over the course of a 24 hour period. The inside is always fishable, high water just limits your access to the outer stretches.

I was up there in July and there were 4 gates open, the inside channel was at the height of the barrier. You have to know what you're doing to get to get out to the barrier and it's a good idea to have a buddy. It has been like this the past few years as Swing said.

Thanks for the link Will. I tried registering but itwas denied because they were unable to contact their database to verify my registration or something. I'll try later I guess.
Anyways, I've started getting ready for my 5 hr drive, but won't leave until Saturday (if the kings are around) and hopefully I'll be fishing on the east side of st Mary's this long weekend. I'm gonna try spoons on a 12 lb test. What do you guys think?

Should be good, try some Rapalas or other similar baits too. Are you planning on wading? The rocks are incredibly slippery, felt bottoms and a wading staff are highly recommended. If you go to the north most pavilion right on the inner channel, you may be able to find a place to wade across but it will be almost up to your chest. Anyways, you'll see when you get there, be careful!

So we ended up not making the trip this weekend. My buddy was busy but it we are definitely going next week. I've also heard reports from people (not in the soo but somewhere else in northern ontario) that the kings and cohos are not running yet in the tribs.

Back from the Soo.
Water level really high in the rapids - couldn't get to the spot in the canal
Got skunked
