#344879 Can anyone recommend a 10lb and 30lb fishing line?

Posted by NADO on 21 August 2019 - 10:27 AM in Fishing Gear Talk and DIY Corner

30lb braid is the way to go on a spinning reel if you want to use it for a wide variety of applications, just change the leader and you are good to go for everything from salmon to perch. Its all preference, some guys like to jig lakers using 6lb leaders and end up fighting a 15lb fish for a half hour. I use 10lb leader and get the same fish in the boat and released within 5 minutes. I don't get any added enjoyment from the risk of fighting a fish on light line to the point of exhaustion but that's just me.

Unicorns swimming around in good numbers already. 30fow down 20ft...

I'm seeing a good percentage of reports with Atlantics in them. It doesn't matter though, discussing Atlantics is more partisan than politics.

I saw posts from several charter boats complaining on Facebook about catching them last year. Charter boats are getting them, pier casters are getting them and river anglers are getting them. Every year the numbers have been going up.

In addition to that the Kings had record setting catch rates in 2017 so i'm not sure what the complaining is for? It is estimated that 50% of the Chinook in Lake Ontario originate from natural production so it is actually better for the fishery to scale back on stocking to see if Natural reproduction can take over.

Also, alewife numbers are down which is the major reason stocking of Chinook salmon has been reduced. Even the US have been cutting back stocking numbers over the past few years and they are now stocking 40% less than they used to. 2018 was a good year for alewife and they hope to bring stocking numbers back up after the alewife rebound. Of course the internet is full of science deniers who say they saw lots of bait on their sonars so that is conclusive evidence in their mind that there is no issue with the alewife population.

#344607 Please help me to reach out good fishing spot in Kingston??

Posted by NADO on 26 March 2019 - 11:31 AM in General Fishing Discussion

Creating memories with grandparents is not easy, in case if we don't live nearby. One way to create memories is by taking grandparents for an outing for a day or more. My grandparents are living in Kingston, which is away from us. We used to visit them only once in a month since my parents don't get time to meet them. By next week I will start my vacation. So I have decided to spend a few days with them. I am also planning to go for an outing with them. Traveling with their grandchildren helps to keep their mind fresh and young. I was thinking out which spot should I choose to make me happy. After thinking a long time I have decided to choose fishing. Is there a good fishing spot in Kingston? I have never tried fishing .Please shed some light on it"

Might be too late for this trip but from the sounds of it with your lack of experience as well as elderly and young companions you should look into going out with a charter boat. It is comfortable and you don't have to worry about anything other than reeling in fish. There is lots of charters out of the area, look for one with washrooms on board with lots of room to accommodate the whole family.

#344518 Kayak Fishing

Too bad the show was cancelled, Pacific Warriors did a pretty good job at showing what SOT kayaks are capable of. I feel much safer in my SOT kayak than I would in a smaller 15' aluminum boat that is much easier to sink when it takes on water.

#344380 Flouro Leader Pound test floating for Steelies

It also depends on the brand you use, pay attention to the line diameter as one brands 6 lb can be the same diameter as another brands 8lb. There is a resource somewhere that showed breaking test results for the different brands and it is all over the map. Drennan is the most obvious brand that comes to mind when it comes to underrating the breaking strength.

#344376 Flouro Leader Pound test floating for Steelies

Hi there,

Wondering what everyone uses for leader sizes when they float for steelhead.  I typically use 6lbs flouro but after breaking off 2 or 3 times setting hooks on saturday I switched to the 10lbs flouro line I use for spin fishing out of frustration.  Hooked into a fish within 15 minutes on my first hook set, nice 8ish lbs buck.

Maybe I just have a spool of bunk line but after that I'm considering just moving to 8 or 10 lbs permanently, unless I'm going for little creek shakers which I have a spool of 4lbs for.  I don't think that visibility is a big difference between each size with how thin the 10lbs even is, but I have read that the slightly thicker line can effect how the bait floats around underwater.

What does everyone typically use?  Can you recommend a line type that I should be using at 6lbs that I won't break off as easily?  I use seaguar invisx line for the 6lbs, and I think the 10 is berkley vanish (which I have had great experience with, no fish have broken off on that stuff yet)

Thanks in advance

I'm not a believer in using light line for steelhead. Even if i'm fishing the east ditches and the water is low and clear I wont go less than 6lb. I usually fish bigger rivers and use 8-10lb seaguar abrazex. If i'm fishing a small river and it has decent colour to it I wont go less than 8lb.

With that said, you shouldn't be breaking the 6lb lead on hooksets unless you are using a rod that is too powerful for 6lb. I have a Rainshadow XST which is a pretty beefy rod, if i'm fishing small rivers I will leave it at home and bring one of my lighter rods.

You must take really good care of your waders with that kind of usage, are you guiding or something putting your waders on that many times a week? The seams on the boots of my reddingtons have been roughed up from pebbles and sand getting into my old boots that had a bunch of holes in them otherwise they would probably be fine still. But 3-4 times a week for 5 years?? I would have a hard time believing that with Simms G4 waders.

I like the Reddington Sonic Pro's I have been using for around 5 years. They now have a few very slow leaks in the feet, so slow that I sometimes question if it is just sweat but im pretty sure they are leaks. Not bad after 5 years of use, three of those years I was getting out with them pretty often.

The first one does look like a laker to me, the white tipped fins don't necessarily mean its a brookie and usually you would see some pronounced markings on a brookie of that size. The tail however isnt forked enough for it to be a laker so im going to go with brookie or splake.

Cops need probably cause, CO's don't have those limitations. They can even search your house of they think immediate action is needed.
