#230682 Bass Opener
Posted by --G-- on 24 June 2012 - 11:54 PM in GTA Urban Shore Fishing
Having never caught a bass, I had been reading lots and was keen to get out to try catch one.
As always, time was short, so I headed to High Park.
Got there around 4.30pm, left about 7.30pm.
Bright, sunny (27 maybe) some occasional cloud cover.
Water quality is good, very clear. Problem is that there is so much top water algae, and weed growth all next to the east side of the pond, if you want to cast past it, you need to send it 20+ feet.
I walked the up and down the entire length of the pond looking for spots for bass. It was a real challenge, and mostly involved cleaning up my lure after every cast.
I had just bought some spinners, so i was working them, trying to figure out what looked best to me.
The water itself was very busy, lots of people fishing for sunfish.
Having spent most of my time getting frustrated by the weeds, I was heading back to head home, when I happened on a nice little spot with just enough clear water that I thought might be worth it.
Low and behold I managed to get this little guy (on a worm):
My gear is an ugly stick with 30lb test (this really helped me not lose any lures) but on the flip side would have made it so easy to just crank this little guy in. So I had left the drag as slack as I could, and tried to play him more.
What a fish bass are! He was spinning, jumping and diving to shake free. Really impressive fight for such a little fish.
I headed home with a new focus - catch more bass. These things are awesome fun!!

Thats ET Seton Park and I think those ponds are fed from or linked to a creek that connects with the main don river, so there's likely fish to be caught. If you are looking for another site in the nearby area that also has fish, try the Don Brickworks Park ponds....
Mike - have you fished the brickworks before? What kind of fish do you expect are in it? I know the don has a terrible rep for being dirty....

yes and yes to both the Islands and Ashbridges.
My advice - go the island, more places to fish, plus its a nice photo op on the way back (downtown GTA) if all else fails.
I think the reason you are not getting any replies here, is cause all this information is on the forum. Read some of the posts, and get yourself up to speed.
Cheers!

#230365 Pike - Ashbridges park
Posted by --G-- on 18 June 2012 - 09:59 AM in Toronto Harbourfront and Islands
I had a little time Sunday afternoon, so headed along to Ashbridges Park in the hunt for my first pike. I had been out the island's a couple of times in the last few weeks, on one occasion I did manage to hook a pike, but it spat the lure before I could land it.
Started at around 6pm, fishing the marina area.
Overcast, and looking like a thunderstorm might roll it at any moment.
I had no luck, so moved around to a new spot I never tried before - spotted 3 or 4 really big carp. Tried for a while to catch them, but they had no interest in anything I had to offer. Still - very interesting to watch them so close.
Rain started, light, but heavy enough to send everyone out the park. This was a good thing for me. I went back to the boardwalk that had been too busy with kids, dogs and runners before. Was trying a crank bait I bought recently at one boardwalk, nothing.
It was time to call it a day, so I packed up and was walking out, passing the last boardwalk I thought I would give it a go "just one last cast" I am always thinking....took my favorite red and white spoon...first cast..BAM...pike on.
Put up a real good fight, tried to run under the boardwalk, but I managed to keep it out. It was a real rush to finally get one.
A good looking 28"

Did u keep an eye on any fish that followed ur lures? they tend to do that alot.
That was my experience at the island.
Either way, I am planning on getting back soon too. I have visitors out from the UK for the next two weeks, but after that I will be hitting the islands for a full day fishing.

#226472 Ashbridge Park Night...
Posted by --G-- on 21 March 2012 - 10:22 PM in GTA Urban Shore Fishing
Only there from around 6.30pm until 8pm.
Weather was fantastic, its a great view of the sunset over the city, very calm waters.
I fished mostly off the wooden dock at the marina - no luck (again!)
I was using mostly spoons, but did switch up to plastics.
I did see some fish breaking the water, I think it was trout...
Met a couple of people there, heard reports about good pike here, but I didnt see any.
Oh, and I did see a beaver...i think he is trying to take that deck home with him! I could hear him chewing away on the deck and then heading off with the wood...entertaining if nothing else!

#226464 Drag not tightening
Posted by --G-- on 21 March 2012 - 10:05 PM in Fishing Gear Talk and DIY Corner
Hey are you using braided line? Because it can slip.
Yea its new braided line, is that by design, or did I maybe do something wrong (keep in mind I am kinda new to fishing...mostly I had the guidence of a good friend back home)
Thanks for all the input so far guys, its really appreciated.
Edit: ran a little google searching, and it seems to be that people reccomend running some mono on the reel, the tieing on the braided line. Seems that this is a common issue with braid.
That would explain the issue, given that it works sometimes then completely lets go. I will re-do that spool with some mono on the base. Unless anyone has any other/better ideas?
Thanks again fellas.

is it the Abu Garcia specialist combo from Canadian Tire - Regular price 80 bucks? If so I had the same problem with the drag, they are just low quality reels despite what some may tell you. The one I have now that I used to use a few years ago has the same problem and the drag seems to only work when it feels like it.
Yea, its the specialist.
So best advise would be to replace this with a decent one?

Its a brand new reel, so i dont expect any washers to be missing, and like i said it was tight at the start of the session, just went slack after pulling out a snag.
I dont see any on/off switch on the reel.
I will try oil it up and see, thanks guys

I dont think going down the route of offering money for license would be the best first step. We all buy a fishing license, and in my eyes that should cover the harbour front too.
I think our best bet is to keep pressure on these people and get a clear statement that we CAN fish the harbourfront and other waterfront areas.
It seems to me that there is very little support to stop fishing downtown GTA, and not a great deal of reason behind it.
My 2 cents - keep the chasing for a clear answer, and if its not the answer we want.....then look at options. But I think that politically charged angle would work best...lets not go throwing money at people just cause they are trying to (and this is only the impression i am getting reading all this) to enforce a law the TPA have no desire to stand behind. This might just be some guy with a bee in his bonnet about fishing, one man wont last against all the anglers in the GTA.
From what I am reading, it seems already that we are winning and that this will blow over. If it will not...well lets get active. I am all for showing my support for this issue. It is shocking to everyone I talk to that we are being told we cannot fish the lake. Canada is home to a great pride in the out door lifestyle (part of the reason i moved here) and I cant see this flying much longer
Either that or we ALL turn up and fish the harbour front and see what happens.

I am sure this is a simple enough question - my abu garcia reel that I have started acting strange.
Normally the drag is set pretty tight, but today while out fishing, i got caught on a snag and when since pulling that free the drag on my reel appears to not tighten, even if i screw it right in, i can still pull the line with relative ease.
Is there anything I should try to fix this? I have try adjusting all the way out, and then all the way in, and altough it certainly is a little tighter, it is by no means a tight drag.
Any ideas welcome. I hope I explained this well...

Good report,
I really gota make my way down there sometime, u planning on going tommorow? I have it off....can meet u downthere. wouldn't mind to fish with someone who knows the place.
I would love to go tomorrow, but I am stuck in work all week.
I was hoping to get back this weekend, but not 100% sure.
If you are going, check out the ferry times...they are not that regular.
Also, read up that report that mike posted, its really helpful.
I was just exploring, but I can point out a couple of places that are supposed to be great for pike. if you are looking for pointers, hit me a pm and I will get back to you,.

Can I assume from this that realistically the only place left downtown that you could fish would be in High Park?
#226224 Toronto Island report
Posted by --G-- on 19 March 2012 - 12:40 PM in Toronto Harbourfront and Islands
I got the 1.30 ferry over to Ward island (this is the only ferry running during the winter), and ended up leavin on the 6.30pm ferry.
The weather was sunny intervals, hitting highs of maybe 14 degrees. not much wind.
I fished alot of water, starting down near the ferry dock all the way into center island and back again. I was trying out all my gear, so it was a mix of crank baits and spoons.
No fish.
I didnt even see anything until after 5.30 - just on my way back to the ferry I got a pike following my lure (spoon) but it wouldn't bite. I am pretty sure he stuck it as it landed in the water, and then followed it right across the channel. If I could have stayed longer I would have, it was a great day out.
Met alot of people out fishing for pike too. No-one had any luck, most people didnt even see any pike. I did hear one report that a 30" pike was caught just off the shore at the church back toward snake island.
I will be going back no doubt, but if I can make it before the pike season stops I am not sure.
I scouted alot of the islands, and really got a feel for what options there is here. Its a fantastic place to fish!

Oh ya same here, this is my actual first season pike fishing with luck..last few years non at all but did learn a lot...n still am.. alright cool.
Did u want to fish downtown? Do u knw spots there? or if u can cme to scarborough town centre...I can pick u from there..n go somewhere around here...n drop u back too. I hav no prob at all. Just depends on when wer both free I guess
I am pretty sure I can get out to Scarborough.....I think the TTC will get me close to there.
This weekend I was hoping to head over to the island, but i am on call so might have to bin that till next week....rubbish! So the alternative is to go the harbour front on Sunday. That will be my plan.
