#313800 Estimating fish sizes from pictures

Posted by MichaelAngelo on 13 August 2014 - 10:22 PM in General Fishing Discussion

Some pretty awesome guesses guys!  Really close to the actuals in terms of weight.  Here're the actual numbers!  Christopher K and Getin were closest I'd say!

Fish #1 Largemouth, just about 19.5" (can't tell EXACTLY) and a weight of about 4.4 lbs:

Fish #2 Smallmouth, about 18.5" and a weight of about 3.28 lbs if I recall correctly

#313715 Killarney tips

Ah, just my type of question!  I LOVE that park, and I've been back over and over again in the past two or three years.  Not for the fishing though.

General stuff off the bat, the lakes there are mostly dead lakes.  Jeff's map will tell you which lakes are the dead lakes, which will be identified as "outrageously clear, blue lakes" in the legend.  Google up Jeff's map, it'll come in handy.

There are also many fish sanctuaries in the park.  Check your route list against the regs for the region to see which lakes you can't fish on.  They are generally dead lakes and lakes that have such small populations of fish that they must be conserved... at least that's what I gather.

Further, Three Narrows is where I caught my first pike.  It was a small one, low 20" range, but I'll never forget it.  I'll PM you with more info!

#313709 Estimating fish sizes from pictures

Hey guys, in light of the interesting thread about this I thought we could play a bit of a game.  Let's post up some pictures of fish we've measured/weighed and get some guesses going before revealing the actual measurements.

I'll start it off with some pictures from this weekend, can I get some estimates?  I have pictures of these fish on a ruler as well as weights (you'll have to trust me on the weights though).

I'd like others to join in too!  Hopefully together we can get more familiar with our favorite finned friends.

#285109 Pfleuger Supreme drag knob needed replacement after 4 or 5 months of use

Posted by MichaelAngelo on 13 September 2013 - 11:15 AM in General Fishing Discussion

How impressed am I with Pfleuger's $100 Supreme offering?

Not very much.

After about 5 months of use, the drag knob starting turning along with the spool... tightening as fish took any drag. I lost one or two fish before I figured out what was going on.

This was not a cleanliness issue, the actual drag knob began scraping away at the top of the spool.

The drag knob was replaced under warranty, but I'm not looking forward to the day this happens again... who knows which fish this is going to cost me.

$100 can't buy dependable gear anymore... and Pfleuger was a brand I respected.
