#304459 Looking for a new Float rod

Posted by freshMint on 05 April 2014 - 02:33 PM in Float Fishing

Although new to steel heading ,thought I would share my opinions..
First purchase was the Clarus 13' worked well for the heavier leaders and landing salmon, but
As I went to lighter leads, 8,6, and especially 4lb, I ended up losing the fish on break offs..
Purchased the 13'6" guide select, reasonable entry level price and rod, and it was night and day..
Completely different feel and my landing ratio skyrocketed:)
I haven't had the chance to try higher end rods, but one day I'm sure I will..
Hope my 2 cents helped a little

#301867 Steelhead Run - 2014

Posted by freshMint on 02 March 2014 - 08:58 PM in Steelhead and Salmon Fishing

I would have to agree with the consensus that it's going to be a wet spring for sure
We haven't seen this much snowfall in a long while
The fishing pressure will be high I'm sure, but
If it does turn out to be a "fish" year,
that should help the spawn rate,
which in turn would lead to a better future:)

#297345 Lets talk about the Fall Run 2013

Posted by freshMint on 13 December 2013 - 04:18 PM in Steelhead and Salmon Fishing

I must say the "fall run" was fantastic. It was my first season of 'steelheading', thanks to a co-worker who took me out once, and I havent looked back.

The first few ventures were mostly me tangling up, and losing fish, whilst watching more seasoned anglers bring in some beautiful fish..I definitely enjoyed myself

each and every outting, and cant wait until the creeks and rivers thaw again.

#294968 What do you think east fishing will be like this weekend?

Posted by freshMint on 18 November 2013 - 08:31 PM in Steelhead and Salmon Fishing

So true about the rain, I am out east and was lucky enough to be on the water today..huge run came in, there were two other fellas beside me, and truth be told I saw at least twenty solid fish landed, and a good number of large fish lost..just amazing..

#294717 What do you think east fishing will be like this weekend?

Posted by freshMint on 16 November 2013 - 07:15 PM in Steelhead and Salmon Fishing

Did anyone have any success today? I am in the 'east' and other than loads of bows in the sanctuary, only saw 1 fish all afternoon..water was super clear, but not too low.everywhere was a pool pretty much.. Any "secrets" to pulling them out in conditions like this?

#294295 Mainline lbs on your center pin

Posted by freshMint on 12 November 2013 - 09:27 PM in Float Fishing

the rating on a rod is your weakest link, not your main line. you can use 45lb braid on a 3-6 rod, as long as your leader is 3lb you will be fine.

thank you fo the info. much appreciated.this site is a great platform to learn from

#294170 Mainline lbs on your center pin

Posted by freshMint on 12 November 2013 - 01:45 PM in Float Fishing

I dropped to 8 from the 10 because I dropped to a lighter rod.. Does anyone run 10 or up, on a rod rated 4-8??
