It pains me to hear this, "I'm a Canadian doing my Canadian duty," and then off on a tirade of hate, recklessness and irreprable harm. This is Canada, the most multi-ethnic country in the world, and the envy of most nations. There is no place for this attitude nor set of beliefs.

Unfortunately, in the forseeable future, conflicts are bound to arise as a growing fisher population competes for limited access to fishing spots; however, the racial undertones are unjustified in any context. I believe an intelligent debate, a sound resolution, and an allocation of recources in this regard is overdue.

Remember your rights folks: Only a police or conservation officer may ask you to observe you fishing permit. Should you be asked, kindly ask them to produce credentials. If they do not comply get on the horn with the OPP.

This scum frog got handed down a "substantial prison term," by my count (4x14years aggrevated assault; 2x10years Criminal negligence) the convictions warrant a 76 year prison sentence. Even if he doesn't serve every day of that sentence, he will be hard pressed in getting a decent job in the future. Although the sentence is just, nothing is justified by leaving someone in a wheel chair.

Here is a link from the Ontario Human Rights Commission to add to the discussion:

Very sad to here about stuff like this. Its sad that in todays society it goes on but just shows there are still iggnorrant douches out there that dont care about others. Hopefully he will get some serious hard time which will give him time to reflect on how childish, stupid and immature his actions were and how deadly they could have been.

Honestly, its about time.

Im sorry to come on here and rant. But fvcken people are NOW (as of 2007) seeing what my dad, uncles, frineds and MYSELF have been seeing for years. Its great something is being done about it now. It defiantly wont stop it, but with big time being served, people will back off a bit.

As for the earlier comment of someone as a conservation/poilce officer asking you to produce your ID. Fvck that too. I dont care if your joe blow, if you've got the balls to come up to me @ 2:30 in the morning asking for ID while impersonating an officer ur gonna get my ID but I am sure that person would be there for nothing good. Even when the ID is presented then what? Push me in the lake? PLEASE. I can't belive I would get so worked up reading this, leading me to admit openly, I ALWAYS go with my bigger more aggressive friends who know would have my back. We go out with bats and things to protect ourselves (No guns LOL) but seriously @ 2-3-4am in the middle of no-where with little to know cell phone signals its the perfect place for crimes like these. There have been hundreds of em that have gone un-reported. I know first hand me and 5 friends fought off about 7 CANADIAN guys who were beating on an older oriental guy and his sons/nephews in 2007 we never went back to that spot.

I can tell you if this had happend to me where my family was involed it would have ended differently. I am not about to give up fishing or my rights. I know there is a thin line I avoid it as much as I can but it if find me I ll be ready.

/rant sorry again just a really touchy subject for me.

I hear you iJay, it's becoming more dangerous.
Good on you for defending the older gentleman and his sons/nephews.

You know it's pathetic when you have to end up bringing protection with you when fishing...It's supposed to be a relaxing past time...what happened?

Trust me man, It happens in every variety. From people just fishing over your lines to people incrouching on ur space. Some of it verbal some of it physical.

I would love to just kick back and relax.

Even this past july we went fishing @ island lake. we rented 2 boats with 4 guys and gear. We were fishing this guy with his girlfriend (who was reading a book) came to us. While i know there is no boundaries and no one owns the lake he was withing 10 feet of our boats as we were fishing and talking loud (Talking about sex, girls, booze and using profanity) This guy begins to tell us off. We apologized he continued on saying indian kids have no respect, no manners blah blah blah. The racial card is the easiest to play, but probally the one that would get you in the most trouble.

At this point 2 of my friends were ready to jump in the lake swim to his boat and punch him in the throat. I just got my black berry out and video'd the situtation as we asked him to shut up and we were getting our lines ready to move to another spot. On a verbal level I will 100% avoid it, but I mean c'mon not every one reacts the same. My buddies were ready to tip his boat and steal his girl's romance novel (we saw the tittle, thats how close they were)

Anyhow I'll stop with the stories, I could go on for days. I would love to see this happening closer to home (The law interviening)

Sorry to hear about your experiences iJay.....

I'm asian and can say I have never encountered anything close to these situations......run into a few jerks here and there on the rivers but nothing that led to violence....Knock on wood....

Hearing about these kind of things makes me wonder what my dad probably went through fishing in the late 80's early 90's with little to limited english....but I never heard of him saying anything like that when it came to fishing.....

Don't know if these kind of things will ever change....hope it does...

Not a bad idea to travel with a few big guys....I always do too....

You know reading your experiences, I feel for you guys in every sense. But there are some comments that I cannot agree with. Violence is never a means nor solution. Stereotypes, be it asian or redneck, white, red or black is not cool. As responsible fishers, we should lead by example.

I pray everyone uses their best judgment out there, even in the face of adversity. Know your rights, acknowledge the limits of reason and the faults of man. I fear acts of violence, racism, vigilantism will only bring on a self-perpetuating cycle that is hard to break. In a perfect world this wouldn't happen; note that the world is not perfect but it is up to us to acheive that endeavor best we can for our community and future generations. Everyone can agree that in our time, unfortunately, these things happen. Let us not pass it on to our children.

Nicely said.

The fact that someone is/and has to, arm themselves with bats ect is terrible. FOR BOTH SIDES!!!!
There is no need for EITHER acts of violence in this day and age.
I am a local to this area ..albiet in the last 2 years, but I have not seen this behavior in action. (Nor would I stand by if I had..BUT Violence is no solution.)
There very well may be LOTS of anglers breaking rules but it is for the MNR to police it, NOT the public.

Now I am in no way defending the idiot(s) who assulted these young men, in fact they are an embarrasment to MY Community!
But having the attitude of "swimming over, stealing the Rednecks Book and punching him in the throat"..well thats the same darn attitude the so called "REDNECKS" were using the night of the terrible assult.

We all can learn a lesson from this life altering incident.

Peace.

Please dont let this stop you from what you enjoy.

There are more responsible and respectful people than anything else.

A lot of these problem arise from people not having respect for one another. There is no reason for line crossing ect....No one owns the water and No one can tell you where to fish, BUT there is something to say in respecting peoples property, space and wether you like it or not, there is some ethics that should be practiced. Like in any sport or everyday life.
Rude people SUCK
Period.
