Yesterday I was out at Turkey Point and the boat traffic was unbelievable, sometimes they were going 3 wide and fishing was almost impossible. I took a break and set my rod down on its stand while I ate my sanwich. All of sudden out of nowhere my rod just flew off its stand and took off like a torpedo under the water...gone for good!

I tried to wade out and find it but some worker at the marina was threatening to call the cops and i couldnt see the bottom anyways so I called it quits.

Deceased are:

1 Shimano Compre Rod
1 Shimano Symetre 3500 Reel
150 yds powerpro braid

All less than a year old

Luckily I still have two fly rods and a float rod so maybe ill try to focus more of my time on fly fishing now that I dont have a spinning combo. I do have an abu garcia specialist combo but its just too hard to go back to something like that after having the sensetivity of the compre. If anyone has anything good theyre looking to get rid of or know of any good deals on right now im all ears...

Why would a marina worker call the cops if you were going in the water? I would've went in the water for sure, depending on how deep it was.

I know Lebarons was having a 20% off Shimano products. A Convergence rod was around 45 bucks. I think a Crucial was retailing for $132, after the 20% off.

NADO:
So you lost two sets this weekend? In your other post (Carp & Pike) ou mentioned losing a SHIMANO set to a carp and here is a Mitchell Reel & Pole combo. Should have been a tragic weekend! Nice fish there though!

And I saw noboidy in the Toronto Island carp there. What time do were you there? I was there on Saturday afternoon and man on man, the place was liek Bombay (an indian festival or like). Took us 2 hours to get on the ferry on the way back!

Cheers

The Mitchell rod was lost by Blair, I have yet to fish Toronto Island.

I think the marina people threatened to call the cops because the marina was incredibly busy and they were probably thinking about the liability of having someone swim amongst the boat traffic. I couldnt really have cared less about them calling the cops but I couldnt see the bottom anyways so I complied. Im never fishing at Turkey Point again thats for sure, it was alright at the beginning of the summer but now the boat traffic is just unbelievable.

I would head out to Labaerons but it is a bit far from me, Im out in waterloo. I might try kijiji or something for a while, I saw a browning noodle for a good price but i'm not too familiar with the rod I think I remember hearing good things about it.

darn sucks you lost a high end combo,i've had a few experiences with this over the years.first i lost a low end baitcast combo to a nice cat fish we could actually see the fish swimming in the water for a bit and then gone, when the fish hit the rod just shot into the water like a rocket see ya.second experience was with a boat cruising around the beach front area me and a friend were fishing,he had his rod propped up against his chair then the boat came zooming by being an ass and his high end combo was gone dragged into the water.he argued a bit with the boat operator but he said he didn't notice us fishing.anyway this time i tied on a big jighead and started to fish for his combo, twenty minutes or so later i hooked up with it and brought i to shore,my friend was amazed i snagged it up from the bottom,i couldn't believe i dragged it in either.what a day that was.

Sucks when good gear goes in!

I was night fishing the harbour wall in Porthcawl, South Wales many years ago when a big wave hit the outside, sent a huge plume up and over the top and swamped the inside ledge. Three guys lost the rods and tripods, along with a chair and tackle box. Thankfully no one was swept in, but there was a mass exodus off the harbour wall, reeling in as we ran!

Go see Dave at natural sports in Kitchener he is a great guy and he always has a great deal on something and the service is great too. I broke my shimano Cumara on bass opener and he was the only one who would replace it over the counter everyone else told me to send it to shimano if I did then I still might not have got my new one back and our season is short enough already!

Ya im going to have to make a trip down to natural sports soon they have a great selection. Im gonna check out there and rainbow sports, rainbow has improved their pricing so they are competitive now.

Any suggestions on other rods that are comparable to the compre? I'm looking for something with a lifetime warranty, medium around 6'6" and very sensitive.

Dunno if you can find a Rapala R-Type rod, but pricing wise, they're quite comparable. I'm using a one piece casting setup and found the the rod to be very good with the price. It was retailing for around the $90 mark and does come as a spinning one or two piece in various lengths.

One year warranty though, but with how rods are made these days, if it doesn't break after one year, it'll last a lifetime.

If you can afford to replace the setup you had I think it would be your best bet it was a good combo. If not I would still stick to shimano but I'm a shimano guy so you know to each there own. Good luck I hope it all works out for you.

I picked up a new fenwick rod from natural sports this spring... Eagle GT. Think it was about $60. Great rod, they have tons of fenwicks in different weights & sensitivities, I went with a medium action, I find the extra backbone is great for bass fishing when you need to drag them out of slop. Real sensitive this spring for jigging too.

Paired it with the phluger president reel. Solid combo.

1 year on both I think for warranty.

Deffinately more affordable than a nice shimano setup, and arguably just as effective. (maybe not the reel)

I had a 25 pound carp take my rod into the water. got it back after diving in the the lake but man was it close. I also witnessed a guy lose his rod beach casting. three minutes later the guy next to him his rod started bouncing he reeled in the rod gave it back to the guy and then he lander a 8 pound rainbow. It was pretty cool lol
