I've been perusing the forms for a couple days now but this is my first post!

Before today I hadn't gone fishing by myself before, but figured it was time I try doing it without someone holding my hand haha.

Got myself a moderately priced spinner rod and learned to tie some knots and went to Milne dam in Markham to try and catch something,
this site recommended to try the east side

so I headed over and right in the spot the site recommended was a man in a lawn chair with 5 rods in the water haha. asked him if he caught anything and he said no so I walked a little ways down and cast out. About 2 hours in neither of us had caught anything, didn't even have a nibble, though i lost two hooks to some logs (I think my knots need some work too haha)

Then the dude lands a small sucker on one of his rods, He turns over and asks me if I want it? which I though was odd, can't imagine anyone wanting to eat a fish from this water, So I told him I was just there to fish for fun and he shrugs and just throws the fish down on the ground half in the water and goes about setting his line again. The poor things just flailing trying to get back in, I got so mad, and walked over and put it back in the water, the dude just chuckles and says "garbage fish". I realize it's no prize catch or anything but its still a fish someone else might have fun catching not to mention its a senseless waste of life.

So after that I just packed up and went to try out Toogood pond in Unionville, the place seemed a lot nicer, the water didn't have that awful smell Milne had, Unfortunately didn't have much luck here either, I tried a couple spots around the pond and finally made my way to the wooden platform right infront of the reeds and it seemed like i might have had some luck there as something did I eat my worm and I could clearly see some carp or catfish swimming right infront of me! but alas no luck had to call it quits once it started to pour.

I guess the other times I've been fishing someone's always been there to rig up my line and point me where to cast, and I guess the places have been teaming with fish so haven't really required any skill to catch haha, so I'm finding it a little challenging trying to catch the fish on my own. I've been using a size 6 hook with half a worm and two split shots on it, casting it out and slowly reeling it in over the course of 2 minuets. I guess I'm just wondering if I'm doing it right haha? Should I be using a float? or maybe different kind of bait? I'd be really cool to catch a catfish or a carp anyone mind shooting a few pointers my way on how to target them? Also if anyone whos fished Toogood pond before has any tips on the best places to fish from I'd really appreciate that too!

I know that carp and catfish are bottom feeders, so u'll need a worm real close to the bottom, or a jig. Something of that nature to get down to the bottom. But i am in the same boat, i'd like to get my hands on a carp, been trying to by the pier in Port Credit.

oh yeahh..i live near milne...and havent really given it a proper chance. i went there once with..all my lures and tried it all..non worked. but there was this guy who was fishing carp n catfish.
i wasnt prepared and was outa time. so maybe il go again soon..maybe today. but which entrance do u use?....i take the entrance of markham rd...onto princess...follow the road down...and on ur left is a dam...jus go down..on the other side of the dam...(left) i really hope theres fish there....i hear theres pike n bass there.

As for the person in the lawn chair next time you see him make sure to call MNR because wasting fish is against the law even if it is a " garbage fish". And as the regulations state you can only fish with one line in the water at a time unless fishing from a boat in the great lakes and even then you can only have two and only out in the main lake in the harbours it's only one. So do yourself and all the rest of us that follow the rules a favor a report these people right away.

Definitely will do next time, I think I'll give milne another shot too maybe try some corn and go after some carp or catfish.

Just got back from a week camping at the pinery and boy was it fun fishing the old ausable channel. We rented kayaks and fished up the river the water was so clear you could just drop your line it a fish you saw and bang get a hit. Mostly just lots of perch, sunfish and catfish but still plenty of fun, a friend even managed to catch a bass!

Yeah definitely, I'm heading there this evening probably, hopefully i'll have better luck than last time haha. Have you tried toogood pond? the ponds smaller but it seems to have a lot of fish in it too.

oh nice man..i was at work all day today..or i woulda shown up as well. i went to togood pond last week end. didnt get much time to fish..as it got dark..and i was on a tight sched...so i js scoped it out. but i saw fish splashing around...i think they were carp or catfish. they have signs saying theres largemouth bass there...i wonder hows the bass population.

did u go to milne today?? how was it?

I have fished TooGood many many times, try the little creek and then you will see a small pond up ahead and there are many carp in there. They are pretty picky fish but it's worth it once you hook one

oh nice man..i was at work all day today..or i woulda shown up as well. i went to togood pond last week end. didnt get much time to fish..as it got dark..and i was on a tight sched...so i js scoped it out. but i saw fish splashing around...i think they were carp or catfish. they have signs saying theres largemouth bass there...i wonder hows the bass population.

got skunked at milne again, lots of fishing jumping, just none biting haha. I think I need to try a different spot in the reservoir, or learn how to tie a hair rig and go after carp, cause theres definitely tons of carp around the princess street access point.

I'll definitely try Toogood again Freezer, thanks for the advice!

I caught a small pansized large mouth bass at Milne last friday. It wasn't anything big, but it was very fun and satisfying, because I wasn't expecting to catch anything and was just enjoying the scenery when at around 4ish, my float started to pull and it was a fish and i was so excited when reeling it in too, i was saying to myself YES!!! I caught a fish in this so called fishless pond, and even better it was a bass. I released the bass shortly. One day it will grow bigger and hopefully spawn more bass at Milne, importance of catch and release in urban ponds and water bodies, if you want to continue to enjoy fishing. I went to Milne because I heard there was northern pike and jumped at the chance to catch one there lol. No luck.

BTW, the water was pure like brown. Pitch dark brown... really dirty... unwise to eat anything there, catch and release is good for recreational fishing.

4 spots at Too Good Pond:

1) This bridge in the path leads to a swampy area fish on the bridge into the swampy narrow river, watch for trees
2) The wooden platform where you went is good, people have caught bass, crappy and carp there (I went there like 20 times this summer and caught nothing though lol, bad luck, but the carp were mocking me waving tails at me... jumping in front of me, i was trying out corn though)
3) Beside teh wooden platform leads to a huge opening with a log infront of you, thats where fish will tend to be, carp chillax there, catfish, bass. (BUT there are millions of red ants, and they will climb you and crawl you and bite you and it will hurt like crazy, and then when night time comes, mosquitos come in for the picnic. So in the end you end up being the lure to catch insects, I seen some one catch sunfish and bass there, but very small, I hope they released it. Barely any meat on them anyway)
4) On the opposite side of the pond where the huge building you can cannot fish on the roof platform but you can go under it to fish. I've seen someone pull a carp there with bread.
5) Beside #4 there are alot of rocks, you can just sit on the rocks and cast very far in, seen catfish caught there, sunfish swiming around
6) Keep going to the left from #4 is the entrance of the river into the main pond, thats good spot too, but again watch for the red ants, they crawl, they bite, it stings like crazy, it hurts really bad. If you catch a huge carp it might be worth it. But Unfortunately for me, I've hard thousands of insect bites and 0 fish from too good pond. I really go there to test my new reels etc before i head to some bigger lakes.
7) The skating entrance beside #4 on the right side as well. Looks good.

Feel free to try new places as well. But the darn is is illegal to fish at cuz its a fish sanctuary where the fish spawn, you have to be a certain distance away from there, which in infront o fthe main parking lot.

Again watch for the red ants if you go to the locations with red ants, hurts like crazy, but unfortunately thats where the carp hang around lol... it swells for weeks and hurts real bad.

Hope that helps, I may be fishing too good pond for fun as well in the future, just to enjoy the nature and try to catch a carp back. If you ever catch a huge carp with a hook in it's mouth and a very long fishing line attached to it... That would be the one that got away and I couldn't pull in without the line snapping lol... post the picture for me hahaha.

yaa im planning on heading to either milne or toogood this weekend..or maybe tommorow morning. if any of u markham guys are down to meet up..it would be great. maybe wel get a decent report for milne lol...neways leme know. peaceeee

For carp you should use corn it’s a great little cheap bait that you can get at your local grocery store. As for catfish you should use cut bait or pack bait.

Lol I’ve been bit at too good soooo many times by those annoying red ants
