It’s the last weekend of Sept., Frank and I wanted to go to Rice Lake Saturday. The dark moon was approaching, but weather conditions were not looking good, it rained all Friday and Sat morning it was still spitting. Frank put a post and asked if anyone else wanted to join us. We met up with John I, who has only been fishing for 2 years, and I drove us up. We contacted 313 who has a great boat and offered to take all of us out.

That whole morning was overcast and appeared gloomy. I had warned Frank and John to dress for very unpleasant weather. 313 was very optimistic of our chances and knows the lake, along with his great sense of humor, we were in for a good time. With my 20 years and 313 over 20 years and fishing for most of his life, we were sure to get something.

313 had set up planer boards for Frank and himself, while John and I trolled jigs and worms. These conditions should have been favorable for walleye, but for the entire morning there was no action. Then the clouds began to break up around 1 pm, this lifted our spirits so we moved towards the thicker weed beds for some bass. After many casts and lure changes, Frank nailed one bluegill. Three hours later, as we then drifted near the shore of one of the many small islands on Rice, 313 hit a hawg. As with many LMB, once hooked this one wrapped the line around a large clump of weeds. 313 tried desperately to get it into the boat. Our first potential fish, 313 fought the fish and weeds, but this time the fish won, this time. 313 was determine that we would all get something so we drifted until about 5pm when I hit a bluegill. Finally our persistence was beginning to pay off. Then John and I started getting large hand sized bluegills and pumpkinseed along a deep channel that 313 knows. After re-baiting with a worm, I felt a thump, “This feels too big to be a panfish”, I said to John. My 5’6” ultra light with 4 lb line was bent over as the fish kept fighting and I had to adjust my drag, John got the net and I pulled out a 1 lb-ish SMB. I think we all knew that the fishing was about to go ballistic.

As the sun was just at the treetops, 313 motored us back to the beginning of the channel getting us ready for some walleye action. 313 said, “You guys set up with white grubs and a worm!” We drifted over the channel and sure enough 313 hit a walleye. He hit 2, Frank got one, then John, this was their first walleye ever. We drifted over that channel 3 times, no hits for me and I was feeling left out. Then, 313 set us on the channel for a final drift, by then the sun had disappeared, with just the glow of sunset, that’s when I hit my walleye. We trolled back to shore, but nothing hit.

That Saturday we all shared our experiences, knowledge, and passion for fishing, had a lot of laughs and caught a mess of fish. John, Frank and I had a great time with 313 who just joined the forum. Thanks to 313 for taking us all out and showing us how to get the walleye, and John for thinking ahead with sandwiches . We all agree that if it was not for this forum we all would never had met and had a very good time fishing together this day.

Hope everyone likes the pics. No pics of 313 and fish b/c he was trying for us to get the fish. What a great guy, your awesome, thanks 313. Next time we go I hope to get pics of you with "trophies"!!!

This site is awesome!! I got out with Alfie and his buddy Scott today, first meet up, got to go to a nice new place on the Grand, I got skunked in my 3 hours out, but they did a lot better me.

Really appreciative to have these forums. Looking forward to meeting up with more.

He knows the lake and we gave him a hand lauching his boat. We got back so late, that we could not offer to wash down his boat properly. We cleaned what we could by flashlight, what a pain that is. Hopefully we'll get a chance next time to help him out some more to repay him for the great time we had.

Glad to have met you Porter, as I said Scott and I do our own thing when we get to the river and keep in touch by txt. Get that SIM card, we'll do it again. And dig out your waders.
Waders are really necessary at that spot.. For everyone else I landed 10 Smallies 3/4 lb to 3 lbs, 3 on the fly. And had a rainbow on the fly about 5 lbs, touched but not landed. My buddy Scott took home a nice pickeral with him. All my fish are still swimming the Grand.

I was out last night got 4 walleye. Fished until 1:30 in the morning.

313 is all prepared for boating at night. I bet they are perfect eating size too. Nice going .

I guess he knows the water pretty well as well eh. that ones thing that always worried me when boating at night, yeah you can have your gps, but if you can't see infront of you you cant see. I had that in Killarney last summer, we had a 30 min boat ride back from were we were working to the channel...it got a like nerve racking with no not even a navigation light on the boat...small 14' lund. lol.

313 GPS was in his head, I was holding the floodlight and aiming it all over the place. He told me where to aim it for the dock, how's that for seamanship? Even with the light I could'nt make out the dock.

So I can imagine your knuckles must have been white the whole time. Not something you would want to do on Stoney Lake were rocks are sticking up out of no where. Even if I had my E-Trex the H model does not zoom in enough to show your exact start position.

If I were out alone, I'd be lost. The shore line is not recognizable in the dark. Not something I'd do alone or with some one less experienced.

Ohh yeah, i was soo scared about running into the rocks, its crazy up there, even in the channel it's rocky all at the north end were coming in. Not fun at all. Was kinda happy to get to the docks were there was light, but i docked it at the end i wasn't maneuvering through the other boats lol.

It's going, i'm getting the casting down decently, usually takes a bit once I'm out everytime than i get the rhythm going and i'm good. I've only caught one fish as well, but I've been out 4 times this year with the fly rod, once in the spring, and than 3 times in the last 3 weeks. lol. Been watching a lot of the Fly Nation, and The New Fly Fisher, and it seems like i'm retrieving the same way they are just not as quick in some cases. But it's a lot of fun, I need to add to my flies though, i only have a select amount. Nice, me and my buddy are thinking about tieng our own this winter as well. You should get the gear out and come out sometime. I'm looking forward to my next time at the grand Alfie, when I don;t have to leave after 3 hours and venture further like him and his buddy scott do.

It's awesome making First Contact with guys with all different skill levels, but have the same passion for fishing. You either learn from them, as we did with 313, or you share your knowledge. I saw your post with your first bass on a fly, very nice going.

When I started with fly, 6 months later I picked up a tying kit. It was a cheap beginner's one and the vice broke on me. At the time I was still in College and had access to a machine shop . Since the material was free, I went nuts and made myself a kick ass vice with brass and tool steel for the jaws. But as I mentioned, since I had limited success with the flys, I stopped and went back to spinning.

If you get a kit, expect the vice to be cheap crap. I think it's better to buy a really good vice, the best you can afford. Then get all the material, cheap at any craft store. The only other things are whip finisher, bobbin , dollar store manicure scissors, some tools you can improvise.....etc. A good vice is the foundation of tying, and the most expensive investment.

I'm on the east end of the city, hope to find some rivers or places to go out here. There are'nt as many rivers out this way; nothing with the reputation as the Grand. How is Bronte and Humber these are closer then the Grand? Yeah I'll dust off my rods. If you don't have many flies yet no worries I think I have plenty, some my own wild creation.
