That's a good place to start. The other option is to see what you can find used; with a little more money, you should be able to get a very good reel. Just make sure you check it out carefully.

Im an advocate of buying used. For 250 you can sometimes get a used islander, ive even seen them go for 200. Sheffield you could get used for anywhere from 100-150.

As for the sheffield, its a great starter. Not that i've fished any other pin, but I can't complain about mine.

Used Sheffield for $150

And perhaps the $300 Loomis combo you're talking about?

the loomis seems like a good deal, is that the rod u want though? A 13 footer would be better imo.

x2. Where will you be primarily fishing? That would be good around lake ontario tribs, but bigger flows you might be under-gunned.

What ever you do buy yourself new reel. If you buy used one there is always gamble. Okuma Sheffield is excellent reel pair it up with 13' Shimano Clarus or Streamside and you will thank me later. Those rods run around $100.00

Fyi th Sheffield aventa and raw 2 are all type same reel with different handle plates bolted on. Between my buddies and I we have each model. They are great and you can get a used aventa for 100ish .... if you look hard enough they are out there with upgraded bearings. I absolutely love mine.
