I'm in the process of tying up some nymphs stones and caddis. I'll screen the trib bottom to see what's living there first, I just hope I've tied something that comes close to what's there.

That sounds sweet man! I like to check the local forage before making lures too. Are you gonna tie any hellgrammite patterns?

This spring will (hopefully) be my first time tying flies and since I have no idea if I'll have time to learn to use a fly rod I'll be focussing on simple to tie weighted flies I can cast with a UL setup like wooly buggers, maybe a nymph pattern or two, and lots of marabou streamers.

I have'nt seen a decent hellgrammite pattern, most of them look closer to a bugger (which is already so generic). Anyone have a good pattern? I'd bet my money on hell.

Back, pratice casting and you'll be ready when the ice melts..... :D

Murray's hellgrammite. Easy as hell to tie and I've not used a better pattern. http://catalog.murra...ions/my-fly-box I know it looks goofy and easy but trust me, it works. Eliminate the lead eyes for a great indicator fly.

Thanks for the confidence man, I'm sure I'll have fun learning even if it is tough.

Haven't come across a perfect looking helly pattern yet myself. Saw one that was super nice but I can't find it. This one was my second choice for looks:

I also am pumped to try this one out: "the cormorant".

The D5 Hellgie seems over dressed in my opinion (all dressed up and no place to go...)
Probably catch fish though Posted Image

Chase is that a pic of Nigronia Serricornis? It looks like it is, only I can't confirm it's max size in Ont is 4".

Corydalus Cornutus is suppose to reach 9cm 3 1/2", Ontario's second most common Hellgrammite.
That fly looks great, but a long hook like that gives the fish alot of leverage to break it at the bend. I've tied articulated patterns with smaller hooks, that's what I would do. But that is a good looking immitation. If you can find the pattern that'd be great.
Thanks.

Actually working on a pattern as we speak....Posted Image

Funny you mention "articulated patterns" as that is how I tie my stones...Posted Image

Haha impossible for me to say if it would catch fish. I can tell you for sure I won't be attempting anything with that many steps for a while though lol.
