So I managed one fish in the mud conditions on Saturday this weekend. After getting it close to shore I began thinking it was not a steelhead. Since landing this fish ive went from thinking it is an Atlantic to a Brown back to an Atlantic and now I almost think its a steelhead again? lol

It has spots on its tail so that rules out an Atlantic. Could it be a confused Coho or Pink jack? Or just an odd looking rainbow? It didnt have a single spot on its back either. I didnt get a good shot of the Anal fin but it looks like the leading ray on the anal fin extends the length of the fin.

Bow.

lol well then i'll have to retract my atlantic text. Ive caught quite a few bows over the past few years and none of them looked remotely similar to this one. The pictures are terrible and dont show the spotting pattern well at all. There were a few more spots below the lateral line that you cant really see. The shape of the head seemed strange as well.

What about a skamania or something?

it is %100 a rainbow, there is spots on the tail. Atlantics don't have spots on the tail and they usually have a couple spots on the cheeks.

In general a Skamania wouldn't have a adipose fin if it's from a New York hatchery. Skamania trout are hatchery raised fished that tend to be slimmer than most steelhead and do tend to have a similar body shape to atlantics. They also tend to come into the river in mid to late spring and stay until fall, they typically are a summer run fish. I must say I had to take a second look.

It can't be Chase. He keeps his fish in the water.

waiting for that one...

Take that to another thread if you would like...that fish was pulled out of a late December run in Penn over an ice shelf extending out into the river and therefore no opportunity to keep THIS fish in the water...

But thanks for pointing that out Rainbow...
