Don't underestimate the power of the Barbie rod.  Watch video for reference.

people wanting to use broomsticks....i use a 9'6 light action pinacle vertex.....casts a mile, GT and dozer can verify, and has enough power to land big fish

20 years ago we used to use noodle rods and 6lb test. Frankly it was a huge pain in the ass, and took forever to land a chinook, IF you managed to land it. I like my broomstick now... LOL! As for the question asked, anything with a 10-17lb rating and 8 feet or more should be perfectly adequate, and I wouldn't worry about going to big expense. Pier rods are meant to be beat on!

Guy landing kings on the Barbie rod should look into joining the 20-20 club.

Land a 20" trout on a #20 fly.

hmm, im gonna head on monday and bring both the 7' daiwa and my 9'6UL....see what happens

thanks for your input fellas :)

I've got a 10'6 Fenwick UL I'll be using on Monday...it may take longer to land a fish (if I manage to land it), but it's preferable to chucking lures with broomsticks and winches (there's a pun in there somewhere) all night.

IMO with the ultralights you will not be making any friends on the pier if it takes forever to land your fish and everyone waiting around.

Just my own opinion

Shimano clarus is boss, I have one. A 10 ft rod it pretty clunky for casting lures for hours. 9 ft or 9' 6" is perfect

Took my 7' daiwa last night, no problem! Water was filthy after the rain but it was a good scout and made some friends haha.

Sticking to that rod, until the river run hits big and then its 9'6UL with a pin alllllll the way
