I went out Monday after 5pm having decided to hit a river I knew about to try my hand at catching a Salmon. Got there, setup my fly rod and hit an area that I knew was holding some fish. After about15 minutes I see my rod starting to twitch and then pull like a freight train...it was then I saw the fish and it was foul hooked :( so I broke it off right away (but did try and chase it a bit to try and net it to get the fly out of it...lol...lost cause for sure!). Since I broke off and didn't have any more leader line with me, I decided to grab my river rod and throw a fly on it. Managed two more foul hooks that were broken off right away and I was just about to pack up and leave when it happened. I had thrown out that one last cast/drift when all of the sudden the line took off! The fish started head shaking like crazy and I saw that it was a fair hook!! GAME ON!!! Didn't take too long to land since I was using my river rod but that's ok because I didn't intend to keep it Landed it, unhooked it and got a couple of pictures that of course didn't turn out worth crap...lol..then tried to revive it. I spent 15 minutes with that fish in the cold water but it was a lost cause :(

So, as much as I didn't intend to keep it, I wasn't about to waste it either. Turns out it was a hen so I saved the roe, and filleted it up and it's now in the freezer...lol...maybe I'll give the meat to my Ex! LOL! Not huge...but it was my first ever Salmon, so I'm still jazzed even though I was a bit disappointed about not being able to revive it.

Cheers,

Cameron

Thanks :) The cages were for a Cocatiel that went feet up a few weeks ago (she was about 14). LOL...and here I thought that someone might notice the Golden in the background...lol..and you noticed the cages. You must have a bird!

I've got ( and had ) everything   Had a quaker parrot at the house for the last few years until my brother moved out and we gave it away.  He couldn't take it with him and I didn't have the time to dedicate to the little bugger.  14 is a good age for a cockatiel, a lot of my friends have birds.  Love the retriever, great dogs.

They can be noisy messy critters though! I can't believe how many times she laid eggs over the years. I've actually got 3 Goldens (Mother, Son & Daughter)..they are awesome dogs! :)

I love the small salmon. The big ones are like fighting a rock. I would much rather catch the small ones. Great post!

Congrats on your first salmon.  Maybe smoke it?  I have caught a few blushed up sockeyes (not tomatoe red, but blushed) that I smoked up and it was excellent.

Thanks gents! I don't have a smoker, but it's sitting in the freezer right now until I decide what to try. The fillets actually looked very clean and bright (comparing it to Bass as I have nothing to compare it to).

you said it. the smaller ones actually jump multiple times. the big heavy ones...you're like hauling a sunken log.

don't forget that the meat is better...well at least for me.

I dont have a clue how I missed this, but CONGRATS OCD!!!!

Holy crap, nice little one you got there.

Somehow I find with all the smaller ones, they are able to spit my hook alot easier.

Wait till you pull one of those logs out!

Congrats, great catch man!
