Safe to say the water out east is in good shape? Thinking of heading there tomorrow but wasn't sure how much snow they got compared to where I am (north of Toronto)

I'm from Ajax and there's not really any snow on the ground.

I fish this river a lot since september and it seems fine to me.  Well normal more like lol.  Garbage is everywhere.. but don't see any evidence there was a tournament.  Hope they did alright, I usually hook into a tank there at least once a trip :)  Funny thing is I seen chinook still swimming around as of last week

Thousands of steelhead are caught and released out east every year on opener. I find it hard to believe that this one day tourney is somehow damaging the fishery.

It's not. Young to the sport steelheaders are always very passionate about the fish and the sport. It is refreshing and annoying all in one breath. But rest assured, a one day tourney will not ruin the fishery. Derbys aren't my thing, but I see no problem in having them from time to time. I also don't mind the new guys getting worked up about it. I was there once too!

GB and huron tribs may have Deeper runs yes, require a bit more skill yes, sometimes. Sometimes it's like taking candy from a baby. I have fished just about every river on GB, Huron, and lake O north and south shore over the last 25. Steelhead are pretty much steelhead no matter where you catch em. My home rivers are GB and Huron, but frankly I don't believe that makes me a better steelheader. I enjoy fishing north shore lake O tribs just as much as I enjoy the geen. The fights are equally good, depending on weather and water temps. The only difference between the 2 is that you can end up with faster flows that the fish can use to their advantage on Huron/GB. One of my favorite creeks to fish is a tiny little north shore creek, and if the water is up I'd sooner fish there than the geen in perfect conditions, just because I enjoy it so much. The one piece of advice I would give any steelhead fisherman is to try not to trip over their EGO. You can learn something new every trip out, I know that I do!
