Are they safe to eat if caught from lake ontario?

I would also like to start catching some sheephead.

I haven't caught one since I was a kid.

They are safe to eat from lake O, never tried but I've heard they're pretty good. Just not my cup of tea..

I caught a big one in the fall, pier chucking spoons for salmon. Just a plain silver wobbler.

ya not too common around toronto area. i caught one in a west trib this past fall and my friend caught one in another west trib several years ago. both times total surprise to us because they are seldom caught around these parts. but they do exist like the pike gar i saw in that latter trib i mentioned years ago. for 2 mins i casted at him but he just wouldn't take. then he took off.

so i don't think you'll have much luck in the toronto area. but if you fish for enough years in the toronto area on lake O or a trib near the mouth, then you'll eventually catch one incidentally.

Sheepshead are like an infestation in Hamilton.. Just fire a cleo (any design works really) and retrieve it close to the bottom.. PM me and I'll tell you a spot that you'll catch dozens of good sized sheepshead within a very short period of time.
