Where do you live?  Reel flies won't tell you how best fish each fly or the little nuances in each that make one pattern more versatile of species appropriate.  Support your local fly shop!!!!!!!

I agree with visiting a local fly shop. Once you learn more about fly fishing, you will find that often each stream will its own hatch schedule, the size of insect may differ slightly and the colour of such insect may differ as well. Much like fishing of any kind, some days the fish are just keyed in on the available food source in the area. If the fish are feeding on caddis that is imitated by a #18 olive tent caddis pattern but all you have is a #14 tan elk hair caddis, you could very likely (most likely) not get bit...even though to you the different is minimal (as a newbie, it would seem minimal).

A local fly shop can advise you on the local fly patterns and the timing (not just morning vs. midday vs. evening, but also what time of year or even the time of the month) to use certain flies. You will learn much more talking to fly shop owners who are in tuned with the local hatches (I hope...if not, find a new shop) and they can smooth that learning curve for you quite a bit.

Getting flies online is like buying bulk crankbaits and not knowing when, why and how you should fish the crankbaits.

I agree with the above comments on bugs, rivers, seasons and the value of the local fly shop.  It would be good to know your equipment and target species. Are you going to fish the Maitland for bass or are you going .... ?

Since I am an old fart, I value a book more than a random search of the 'net for information.  I find the info on the net is not very deep and is rather scattered, unless you can find a website that reviews species, equipment, flies and technique in a step-by-step manner.  A book will answer many of your questions, and give you a good basis for gathering information when you do visit a fly shop or get responses here.  Any general one with lots of pictures (worth 1,000 words) will do.

Here's one, and another, and one from Orvis, and one from LLBean.

no, but steve is a good guy, also a well seasoned fly fisherman, and is capable of guiding you in your selections, personally i can;t think of any fly only shops around durham region, i don't consider toronto local.  with him being in goderich, most of the small town tackle shops are geared to cover spinning and downrigging fishing

Lol goderich bait and tackle is quite the place.. If you were willing to make the drive I'd say stop into angling sports in London or Lambeth rod and tackle. Steve from Lambeth will set you up nicely, he's a great guy and full of fishing knowledge! I'm into centrepinning but use run flies under my float, he set me up great with some nice flies. He's very helpful with people newly getting into any type of fishing. Another place is forest city fly shop in London too. London is definitely a hike from goderich but I make the hike to goderich weekly during steelhead season. I can make it in about 45 mins... Going fast lol
