They come in before the main trout run, I say around ice out mid march best bet near April. Use earth worms and make sure your bait drags on the botton since they are bottom feeders, you want sucker heaven message me since I can't name rivers.

Right at bottom with pieces of worm works wonders.  I was floating a cm long piece of worm with the innards completely washed out - float went down, set the hook, 10+ lb hen steelhead... no sucker thats for sure

If you are using roe bags and steelhead bait for suckers are you fishing a close trout section? If it is, why not use corn instead? At least have a fighting chance against a CO...

For stealhead just keep changing your set up lead length and shot size can make a big difference ... Try beads and flys !! Eventually you will get some fish and break your losing streak !!! Last summer I couldn't catch a fish for the life of me and I tried everything I could think of and then final to got a hook up mid fall and my confidence back and I haven't been skunked since

same, i was in the east last fall, i know for a fact that this hole im fishing has fish, i was on it for about 1 hour, nothing, then i decided to move the float just about 2inches, the whammmmmm!!!! the 2nd drift after adjstment, just saying that dont do the same mistake i made that i stuck up on 1 standard rigging depth, just keep trying then if you hit them stay on the same way if youre fishing the same hole, thats what my advice to you, i know im a beginner but i just want to tell you my story,

i'm also one of those guys that fishes for suckers to "scratch that itch" after winter. however, i've only ever caught them between mid april and up to mid or late may. that's when they're at the their fullest. though i did find a nice batch of them in november once.

as for feb and march, i had no idea they were in rivers by then. i've never actually fished in those months but if i could ever find a spot with them at that time then i'd have a go.

since i don't take sucker fishing seriously i only fish for suckers if i can see them so the water has to be low and clear.

i should come back here in a few weeks and check with you guys on the conditions in creeks and rivers and if suckers are coming in strong yet.

and +1 to worm on the bottom. also corn. never tried anything else for them.

in some spots i also encounter nuisance fish like creek chub who hit the darn bait before it can even touch bottom, which on some days actually makes sucker fishing difficult!
