This looks pretty good, although the tinsel isn't even, did you use floss for the body? If so can you post a pic?

JMatt -

Your persistence is paying off!  Regarding the heads:

  1. if you are crowding the eye, either unwrap a few wraps and redo, or push everything back a bit with your thumbnail,
  2. don't rush - place each thread wrap right next to the one before so the head is smooth, build up the thread to make a smooth bullet shape,
  3. thin your head cement, and then use two coats - the first one sinks in and binds, the second one fills in the gaps and leave a glossy (and tougher) finish.

It's the busy time of year for me, although still tying flies on breaks (I work from home mostly).  Heard you dropped in to Gagnon's - I'll PM more tying ideas soon.

Ok good. If you want a nice smooth body (doesn't matter much with popsicles but does with other streamers and wet flies) make sure you tie the floss and tinsel in the length of the body with edge to edge wraps of flattened thread, then really take your time with the floss and look at the difference!

Yes, that's what I was getting at. I find Uni is absolutely horrendous to use with floss but you can get away with it, try making an underbody over the tread with uni stretch and then flat nylon (danvilles) or ultra thread 70 den.

Also, it occurs to me you may be using uni flos, while you can use it and get a smooth body try either rayon or silk, much nicer final product.

Yeah, the passing grade for engineering degree is 51%...fills me with awe...fulfilling the "minimal" requirements for certification does not make you a master...

I'm not looking for apologia from those who are pleased to settle for the quotidian, or the weak minded...have some pride in mastery...
