Hey everyone,

I was wondering, what's the difference between a 9ft spinning rod and a 9ft float rod? I want to buy a rod to use with a centerpin, and a 9ft spinning rod is cheaper than the float rod that's also 9ft.

Most float rods have high frame guides and the first couple guides are smaller on a float rod than a spinning rod

You can get by with either rod.

Sure you can but a. 9' float rod is really short !! Great for head waters but too small for main branches

like i said in the other thread, a float rod has a soft action on it to absorb the fight and protect light leaders, where the spinning rod, with exception to the UL, has a more stiff action to it where its assumed you're going to using a heavier mono or braid

Haven't tried it but I'm sure most members have tried using a spinning rod vs a float rod.

Personally I thought it was out of my league to buy a float rod based on my experience but honestly, float fishing with a pin makes life SO much easier. It only took me 1-2 outings to really feel the difference once I got comfortable.

Worth the money

you don;t need to get a pin right away with a float rod, i used a spinning reel for a couple of years on my first float rod( its now my pier casting rod) until i got a pin, then moved on to the fly rod.  the softer action of float rods is whats makes them worth their weight, what reel you use is up to you
