NEW! - Here's a heads up for those of us who fish in the Sudbury to Sault Ste Marie area. Zone 10 waters north of HWY 17 are now open year round for smallies.

Didn't realize they were open year round in our zone, that's pretty cool.  I didn't catch any all winter, but it's nice to know we can fish for them in the spring.  I won't actually keep any bass I come across in May and June.  But in targetting Pike and Walleye, sometimes you come across the occasional smallie, and you can tell by the aggression that you're close to a spawning bed; it's best to move on past it.  They're fun to catch because of that aggression, but it doesn't take long for their fry to be gobbled up when their guardian is dragged away.

I live down by Parry Sound,  but make it up to Carter 2 time a year camping, May 23 to 26th this year is my first trip. Now I do not drive 3 hours to fish Small mouth, I go for the trout and walleye, but IF I gt some small mouth in May I will keep them, there HAS to be a reason why smallmouth is open all year there, They must be over populated, so if I get some I will keep them, I am not Planning on Net fishing them but If I get one drifting a dry fly, or jigging for walleye its in the boat
