Is it still wayyy to early to hit piers and start catching salmon? also do you think the run is gonna be late or early (I'm pushing for late lol) this year because of the long winter?

Probably to early from shore, I would expect an early run however. we've caught 'staging" fish already.

I really want to try and catch staging fish before they hit the tribs on the fly. I've heard of folks "surf-fishing" in the great lakes and having a blast!

Imagine a king on the fly in open water?! I feel like you'd be into backing within seconds :D

Heres a fly caught king madoc... If anyone wants to get out and have a good time off shore without the crowds let me know... last year we only saw 4 other people all season.

I remember I went to ... that place ... early august last season and there was one lone king sitting in one of the rapids, gin water scorching hot day. The odd 1% take off early.

God darn. Im all frazzled now.  I have to fish tonight.

I'd be interested as well, I actually have a friend who says that he'll be out this weekend at a trib that shall not be named.

i have lost about 7 spoons since june casting the lake O side already. already landed a few browns this early during sun down. but 10lb test just won't cut it for salmon and that's what i think is snapping my line. I saw a guy hauled in a 15lb salmon using live minnows in an east harbor. but he only caught one. I think that's the best chance to catch them this early...harbours.

you could always scratch that itch by taking a charter.  and if you are on a boat registered with GOSD you have the possibility of winning something.

Just cause its not time for them to enter the tribs, doesn't mean they aren't in close chasing baitfish
