Anyone have experience fishing from the piers in the rain?  Thunder showers?  I know it can be pretty scary out on the piers if there is lightning, and wouldn't want to be out there when there is a light show going on, but in general, safe otherwise with no lightning?

i agree, plus for whatever reason, the years ive been fishing, everytime a thunderstorm and lightning starts rolling in, the bite just dies off like instantly. like you could be smashing fish all over the place but as soon as you hear the first thunder and see the first lightning, any species that i fish for just shuts off like a light switch, thats just my 2 cents.

Fair enough.  They are calling for major thunderstorms tonight.  :(  Tomorrow is another day.  Thanks everyone.

I've done harbour fishing in the rain and blizzard and still had a good day...but i don't think walking around with a 13foot conductor is a great idea during thunderstorms.

Not to sound paranoid, but piers and long graphite lightning conductors seem like a bad idea. This is from today:

if im fishing subsurface in the rain usually its fine or even better sometimes. but surface action dies right down in any rain.

have had an amazing show of trout rising in every direction instantly shut down because of rain rolling in

Pier fishing in lighting might not be the best idea. I feel more safe if there is some thunder when I am on a river with tall trees all around me.

As far as storms rolling in, I think It might shut off some species but I rarely stop fishing when its storming. Harsh weather can act in your favor for some fish, lots of days I have fished essentially alone in prime locations during bad weather. The only time I have hit 20+ steelhead days without a soul in sight was on incredibly windy or nasty days. On the other hand I pay close attention to the weather when In a boat.

I'm going to have to say no to fishing during thunder storms in any situation. Just a suggestion... :)

Agree with CD, the bite stops during a thunder storm... but if you can time it right, fishing right after any rain can be excellent!

thunder may not hit the same spot twice but it can hit the same target...but it can meet it's match.

Nothing like being in a pier with a fishing rod during a thunderstorm. Safe than sorry
