I had one of the biggest surprises of my fishing career. I headed 15 min from home to a creek that I have never caught a trout in, ever. The location is about 200km by river from a great lake! First pool, first drift a PB steel head came up from the depths and nailed the fly. I barely landed it on my 5wt fly rod. I had no net, didn't bring my go pro or anything as I wasn't expecting much, if anything. Quite the day!
How can one tell if it is a resident/stocked/migratory fish? I checked the fish for a tag but didn't see anything.

If that's a resi it is a massive one. Judging by size alone, I'd say its a steelhead. Looks beat up the way a steelhead travelling kms of river would look too. Well done!!

It was ~21" for reference. There is another creek that is close by that receives tagged fish that make the ~200km journey, its truly amazing. I will measure the water temp in the summer to see what it gets up to, it seems to be dominated by chubs in the summer.
