Hey guys,

Been a while!

Now that its starting to warm up, im super excited about getting out this year.

Went out last week and it was a bit chilly, not much movement.

Just wondering for those of you that head out to hamilton harbour / cootes.

In your experience, is it too cold still? Are the carp hungry by the carp barrier?

Im itchin to do some fishin

Don't think it's too cold.
People fish Carp in the Harbour in Jan. I'm not one of them but I know they fish and catch. Check some older threads. I remember 1 a few years ago that was just after New Year.

Earliest I've fish at Cootes was April...saw some carp but no bites. However, I was using sweet corn at that time and was being stripped by Round Goby constantly. I do know people catches them in April

Earliest carp I caught was on March 21. It was a warm spring in 2014 and we were fishing an area with warm water influx on Lake Ontario shoreline.

I caught a nice full mirror carp that day, plus two others.

And my friend landed a 40lb common (weighted), plus 5 others.

Under the right conditions, you can catch them all winter...especially if you can find an area with warm water influx, or a shallow dark bottom bay where heat is absorbed.

This winter is even warmer than 2014...so there should be some feeding carp if you know where to look. They tend to put on the feed pre-spawn, then reduce feeding during the spawn, and return to feeding post-spawn.
