This was a first for me, it has never happened to me before and I have never witnessed it happen to anyone else. I have had lakers hit a bait that I was jigging while I wasn't looking, I have also had Lakers hit baits I was working very slowly on bottom thinking I had whitefish on the screen. One thing that has never happened to me is a Laker coming up and hitting a dead sticked swimbait 20' off bottom while I was not even holding the rod!

There's a Laker vid on youtube, where the guys in it say a giant laker took a swipe at their transducer.

Day 5 of bout with meningitis, good sign I still have an ok memory lol as I just dug this up and randomly clicked the right point in the vid:

They probably mention it somewhere else in the vid too, and it might even have happened in another vid too? Possibly JigheadsTV, Uncut, or another random Muskoka clip..

Edit:

They mention it more clearly here:

https://youtu.be/1J8wrquaUtg?t=19m45s

And again:

I had that happen once with a white tube on Simcoe. I had it sit there half way in the water column while I was eating a sandwich . Never landed the fish , but I'm sure it was a laker.

Was that a 30 minute fight?

That run at the beginning was crazy

Well over 30mins, during the vid they had to stop filming to delete other footage to make room on their memory card to keep filming.

I think it could have been shorter, but he took his time, given it was an absolute trophy for that lake.

Yes, had same thing with whitefish and ling a few days ago, and a laker last year. When they are focused on hitting the bait they go crazy

A few years ago in the Ottawa valley, I had a micro plastic shrimp on a set rod halfway up the water column in about 50fow and after getting no bites all day we finally got one exactly like this but lost the fish. Fast forward 2 long boring hours later, same bait, halfway up, SLAM and RUN like there was no tomorrow. Finally landed it and it was a beautiful 7lbs laker that hit like pike and ran like a carp. You really don't get those kind of hits to often but when you do... oh man, what a rush. When you hear your drag screaming from 20 feet away and you see that rod trying to jump in the hole, you can't help but turn into a 5 year old. Great catch NADO!

I cant understand how lake trout fights last for so long. A friend of a friend tells me stories about 20+ pound lakers they have caught that can take 20,30 or even 40 minutes to get through the hole. I have never caught a 20 but I have landed my fair share in the high teens and I have never had a fight go much longer than 5 minutes. That fish was an easy 10-12lbs and I had it through he hole in less than 2 minutes.
