Just looking for any info on what type/size of rod, line, leader, etc I should use to fish Salmon and/Triut in shallow rivers this spring. Very new to this type of fishing so a y and all info is more than appreciated

Hi, I am also quite new to this and I have only been fishing regularly for about a year but this is as much as I can gather. You will be fishing for migratory trout in the spring (Steelhead) which I use a 12'6" spinning rod for, however the more effective method is usually a centerpin setup which can be more expensive in my opinion. If you are into fly fishing you can also do that. With conventional tackle you would be float fishing with flies, spawn sacks, jigs, beads, etc... under a float in a place which holds fish like a run. For line I like to be stealthy and go in the 8lb range but it depends on what kind of rod you are using and what it is rated for,and what size fish and the ammount of current. Try not to spook the fish by getting too close to them or wading near them as this will make them far less likely to bite. however if you are just beginning you dont need to spend a bunch of money on gear. Just remember to practice proper catch and release and not injure the fish. I am also quite new to this so this so I really dont know all that much. Dont just go out and drop a bunch of money on tackle and stuff though. Another good way to get info is by just asking the guys at the store about it and they'll help you pick out stuff that suits your needs and budget.

rod: 9'6" medium light power, fast action float rod

reel: 2500 size spinning

mainline: 10 mono 

leader: 5.6# or 6.6# redwing tackle phantom fluorocarbon leader

terminal tackle: xs swivel, 7 gram clear fixed float, non-removable black coloured split shot, size 10-14 hook

lures: beads, roe, pink worms, wooly bugger jigs (black, olive green)

Welcome. There is a variety of methods for salmon & trout during spawning and I find that all of them work.

You can use a salmon/trout rod and short cast spinners, spoons or tots or bottombounce yarn or eggs.

You can use a float rod with centerpin / spinning reel drifting flies, eggs or beads

You can swing or high stick flies, beads or yarn with fly rod & reel.

 

Take note that post spawn fish are aggressive and hungry so that's your best chance.

 

Avoid fish in pebbled shallow water...those fish are most likely spawning and won't bite. and avoid walking on their redds. Good luck.
