[Just Me and my fishin pole]

Hey there everyone. 

 

Im new to bass fishing, I started this past summer. I have one 6'6'' Medium Power fast action spinning rod and I love it. I have 8LB mono spooled on it right now.

To tell you the truth thats the only line Iv'e ever fished with. I use the rod for Cenco's    Wackey Rigged and Texes Rigged. I also fish for pan fish on this rod. Bought it at Canadian tire for cheap, it's worked great though. I am thinking of getting a baitcasting rod and reel. I know they can be hard to use at first. I have practiced with my neighbors baitcaster and I like it. So I know the basics of them. It was a 6'6'' Medium/Heavy fast action. 6:3:1 gear ratio witch was a little to slow for my taste. I am wondering as a second rod should I get a Medium Power Baitcaster or a Medium/ Heavy Baitcaster. Or maybe something different. 

I have heard something about the baitcasting rods have more backbone in them whether this is true or not. 

 

 

Alot of people on YouTube are saying to have the rod I have now and a Medium Power Baitcaster and a Medium/Heavy Power Baitcaster to get of to a good start.

 

Im on a budget so I can't afford two more rods right off the bat.

So overall I am wondering what you guys think I should get.

 

 

P.S    Keep in mind I am a bank fisherman.

In my modest opinion spinning reel beats bait-casters for the shore fishing.

I like using a 7 ft med spinning rod for most of my bass fishing. I spool it up with 15lb stren max cast (to a fluorocarbon leader) for nice long casts

A 7 foot medium heavy spinning rod is going to be your best bet, especially if you are shore fishing. Spool it up with 20 lb braid and then you can tie different fluorocarbon leaders on depending what you are fishing for. If your fishing senkos in the weeds than don’t even tie a leader on or if your fishing top water baits in open water- again don’t tie a fluoro leader on.

I literally own 15 - 20 fishing rods and I’d say a good 10 of them are medium heavy at different lengths. People will say medium heavy is too overkill but I disagree because a medium heavy rod will give you that backbone to use it In weed areas and in deeper water.

I prefer spinning reals over bait casters and fishing rods I like to use a med-heavy 6'6" or 7'. And I also tie on 8lb mono and it can catch anything if you know how to use it right. 

 

I used to like fen wick a lot or St Croix rods but the last few years the quality has really got worse and I'm not too happy with the Fen wick I bought this year. Just my opinion.

Since you already indicated you're a bank angler....You will need something that can get you some long casts. Spinning reel. When bass fishing you don't need long casts all the time. What you need is a good gear that is versatile to whatever condition you might encounter. Line won't matter. (mono, braid or fluro). What matters is what you offer at what condition. Bass tend to be sluggish in cold weather so they don't like chasing much of crankbaits and spoons. Their shallow cover shrinks as weeds die. They move to rocky areas, docks and bridges.

I agree with the fenwick quality. I switched to Okuma 3 years ago after some dismal fenwick rods that didn't last me long.

It seems I should go with a medium heavy spinning outfit. Sounds right. 

I really never thought of getting another spinning rod and reel.

 

What size reel do you think I should get, I have a 6'6 rod now, what lenght should I get this rod, the same or different.

3000 size if you’re bank fishing- Wouldn’t go any smaller than a 2500.

I personally would have go with the 7' rod but it really depends from what you are comfortable with/how tall you are/ how much room is it to cast in your fishing spots.

For the backbone I would go medium heavy and fast action for bass (or medium fast to keep it more universal)

In fact I just described my own most used rod (really old Fenwick 7' med heavy fast + Tsurinoya NA4000)

7 foot medium heavy extra fast with a 3000 size spinning reel and call it a day. Extra fast tip in case you want to use it for finesse fishing (I.e. drop shotting etc.) . An extra fast tip will never hurt because you have that medium heavy power for that backbone like fishing salmon off a pier.

Just use a medium fast with a 2500 size reel. It's the most versatile rod and can be used for almost any species and any type of fishing). I've even landed salmon off the pier using one.

That's your best bet. everything else will not matter. I like to run Hi-Vis mono...12-15lb. you won't miss a lot of hits...

Hey there guys, it's good to be back.

 

I have some news. So you guys told me to get a 7 ft medium/ heavy fast 3000 size spinning reel. Well i just really wanted to try a baitcaster so i have been looking and i came across a

Piscifun Torrent  Baitcast reel 7:1:1 gear ratio. and the best part it was only 49.99 Canadian dollars. The reviews were really good on it.

I also came across a Piscifun Torrent one piece casting rod. 7ft medium/heavy fast action. It was the rod i wanted except it only sold them in the USA. So the rod was out. I looked for a different rod but it was hard to find one that was good quality in my budget. then i came across a Baitcaster rod and reel combo. It is an Abu Garcia Blackmax. The reel is 6:4:1 gear ratio. Rod is 7ft medium/heavy fast action. it is a good  price if you ask me.

Let me know if you have a blackmax. There suppose to be the most popular baitcaster in the world. Not sure.
