hey guys I am gunna be fishing the gr*nd next weekend as I will be in the area for a family event I just wanted to know if anyone could help me out. I am looking for some browns (I'll be in the upper section) but I am not sure what type of flys I should be throwing and what colours or techniques are best up there.. I am moderately new to fly fishing as is so being thrown into a place I have never been before just amplifies the challenge. Would love if someone could help! Thanks boys and cheers. (Also what parts of the grand are even open right now? I read the book but don't wanna make any mistakes)

Some general patterns that are always worth trying are Hare's Ear Nymphs and Pheasant Tail Nymphs. Try size 14-16 for now maybe. They can imitate a lot of different sorts of nymphs. Partridge and Orange wet flies in size 14-16 might be worth a shot too. BWO is likely your best bet this time of year for dries, but take a look at some hatch charts online. I'd guess we're behind a typical hatch schedule by a week or two this year, but I have no way of quantifying that right now. 

 

As for open season, pretty much anywhere between Shand Dam and Hwy 86 can be accessed, but default to using single barbless hooks, and don't try to keep anything. There are a few sections where you can use barbed hooks and keep fish, but they're pretty few and far between.

 

Good luck and share some pics - even if there aren't any fish. It's beautiful along that stretch of river and scenery is always welcome!

I use husky jerks 11" and Alabama rigs to catch monsters at the ganaraska river nobody fishes there tho keep it secret.
