I've already wasted 30 or 40 bucks just trying to get some gear together for the rest of this season. I tried Berkley Big Game fishing line, and I realize now that I would need to use a baitcaster for heavy line like that. The thing I didn't like about the Berkley line is that when I put it on my reel, after I had it all set up as soon as I opened the bail, due to the stiffness of the fishing line it kind of puffed outwards and flew right back off my reel. 100% of the line I put on just flew right off. I think this line is crap, I wouldn't recommend it even if you were using a baitcaster. Also, I bought some 30lb Spiderwire, but I failed to read the description on the packaging before I bought it and I am not looking for a line that is made to sink like flourocarbon.

Does anyone know of a 10lb line that they've used that works well for a spinning reel? Also can anyone recommend a good 30lb test line that they know works that I could use on a baitcaster to switch out when I'm fishing in a good spot for larger fish? I'm not worried about price, I'm willing to spend probably 15-20 bucks if I have to on the 10lb, and 20-30 bucks for the 30 lb. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I think I can help you with your spinning reel

Get 15 lb Stren Max Cast fused superline

Very inexpensive, casts really far, and has ZERO line memory which is amazing

Then use berkley trilene or any other good mono to use as a leader.

I usually use the uni to uni knot to connect the two lines.

As requested;

Spinning- 2 options- 10 lb Power Pro Braided line or 10lb berkley Trilene XL monofilament (Red box)

Baitcasting rod- Power Pro 30lb braided line

I'd say 95% of my rods are spooled with Power Pro braided line. Casts a mile, very strong while yet very thin diameter. In fact the only one of my rods I have spooled with anything different is my open water top water rod I use for smallmouth bass fishing. This rod is spooled with 8lb Trilene XL monofilament because it floats and also has some stretch. In addition to my other rods spooled with braid, I usually have fluorocarbon leaders tied onto the braided line. As Ibstacle mentioned above, you can use the Uni to Uni knot to tie different lines to each other.

In my opinion, I would spool both rods with Power Pro braided line. If need be you can always tie different leaders on depending what you are fishing for. i.e different lb tests for different species and applications.

What are your main species you are planning to target?

Fishing for what ? Using what length and power of rod ?
IMO opinion this braid , fluoro leader bs all the extra swivels and crap just a money grab.
On the river or off the pier 6 -10 lb clear Stren tied directly has never failed.
Don't listen to any of those product pushing yankee fishing show commercials.

You don't need to fish with cable you will catch way more with 8lb Berkeley clear mono and your set. Don't go green or florescent just plain old clear.

You need a decent rod and reel and set the drag right but putting on Braid that's four times stronger than the fish your going for is just rookie and you know the rest of us are laughing and thinking do you have that shiny Shimano jacket also?

I do change my line a lot but I just think it goes with getting ready to head out on a trip and mono does not last long so change it often.

I've fought salmon musky you name it on 8lb mono. It's called drag boys.

Last trip one person used 12lb the other used 8lb and the score was  1:12 so go figure, same lures same everything except the line size.

Maybe for pier casting the line isn't so much important because your fishing a moving bait. But Bonzo didn't actually say what he was fishing for and what he was using it for. Maybe he's finesse fishing for bass? In that case, take your mono line and burn it because braided line with a fluoro leader will straight up out perform mono every time.

Some of you will learn one day.

Finesse means delicate.
Ultra light rod 6 -4 lb test.
And lots of fun.
30lb braid means.
Telephone pole and winch.
Fighting weeds and pads and cutting veg to get at your fish. Lol

I run 30 lb Big Game on all my trolling reels. I would not use this line for any other application. As you mention it has a lot of memory. All else aside I swear by it on the big pond. Comes down to personal preference I guess.

I run cameras that look straight down my line and have tried all types to see what is and isn't visible down there. Floro is best for visibility and only 17lb test and under. Anything over can easily bee seen. Mono is easily seen as well. Braid being the worst for visibility. Stuff sticks out like a sore thumb. We don't see it from above but everything down there sure can.

For my casting and float reels I run Gamma. Love this line for in the rivers. A little give on a hard hook so you don't break em off right away (that sux too btw). I find it does not have much memory even after sitting all summer/winter. I can cast a mile with this stuff too. All comes down to preference and target species.

30lb braid is the way to go on a spinning reel if you want to use it for a wide variety of applications, just change the leader and you are good to go for everything from salmon to perch. Its all preference, some guys like to jig lakers using 6lb leaders and end up fighting a 15lb fish for a half hour. I use 10lb leader and get the same fish in the boat and released within 5 minutes. I don't get any added enjoyment from the risk of fighting a fish on light line to the point of exhaustion but that's just me.

Your missing the total basics .
Line strength has nothing to do with how fast you land a fish.
The whole movement towards 11 to 15 ft rods is the ability to use 4 - 6 lb test.
Lighter line equals more hook ups.
Look at the rod as a giant shock absorber.
Matching rod specs with quality reel and line is the goal. And an art in itself.
Have seen to many people over the years suffer exploding rod syndrome. Lol

So if he’s throwing a frog in the weeds you’d tell him to use an 11-15 foot rod with 6 lb test ? Or if he wants to use a drop shot, 11-15 foot rod ,spinner bait 11-15 foot rod?

Bonzo78, what are you going to mainly fish for ? If your river fishing or pier casting, ok an 11 foot rod may be an option but most rods are around anywhere from 6-8 feet for most applications. Without knowing what type of fishing you’ll be doing is hard to point you in the exact direction.

I’d mostly agree with what NADO said above. Use braid and tie on any lb leader you wish.

I don’t think that’s what Bonzo said. Not anywhere did I see him say recommendations for river fishing.

Yes, 30lb braid for fishing the big largemouth in the weeds :)

That was a reply to Nados theory on light line causing exhaustion and taking longer to land fish.
And lake trout is the one fish you always want to take your time bringing up anyways.

Bonzo

You spooled your line improperly

if you don’t spool STIFF monofilament/flourocarbon properly, It will spiral/twist as you spool it on

when you cast if your lucky enough to get your bail closed then open without unspooling

it will spiral out as you cast

Letting the spool bounce around the floor as you wind line on your spool is Wrong !

if you don’t have a line spooler,

You need to secure the bulk spool on its end so line comes of the top in counter clockwise direction.

This will allow the line to wind onto your spool in the clockwise direction as your bail

winds around your spool without twisting the line.

you'll find video & explanation on YouTube “proper monofilament spooling” or something like that ?

the simplest solution is to dump the ancient outdated “except for Old Dogs that can’t be taught new tricks” Monofilament.

spool up with PE braid

spinning reel, 8lb or 10lb braided,

baitcaster reel, 40lb, or 50lb braided line ?

50lb braid = 12lb monofilament diameter.

wet down the braid on your bulk spool with water or silicone spray/Reel Magic, first couple time out to break in line

this will avoid wind knots,

tie on a 10 to 20’ monofilament shock leader w/ PR knot, FG knot or Albright knot,

you’re monofilament line floats,

if you want a sinking line use fluorocarbon leader instead of mono

(don’t use uni to uni with mono or flouro) you’ll ruin the Guides on cheap rods, ie Walmart/Crapy Tire, rod & reel combos

Rods less than $150 rod only without reel have Cheap Guides

uni to uni knot constantly going through your guides will eventually ruin guide inserts

go on eBay lookup

“Ashconfish” 8 strand PE braided line, lots of colours & metered multi colour depth counter

its very good quality braided line 100m, 300m, 500m, 1000m & 2000m rolls

they also have 16 strand hollow core, You can splice & serve your leader line into for knotless wind on leaders,

(Ti Ridux is gonna love this part, he thinks Im an inshore Everglades fisherman) !

I’m using blue 16 strand hollow core on all my 5 big game Spinning Rigs, 40lb, 60lb, 80lb, 100lb & 130lb

40lb for Tarpon/Black Fin/Wahoo and up 130lb for Blue Fin/Yellow Fin/GT’s

dont buy 4 strand when 8 strand is so cheap 4 strand isn’t very smooth regardless of brand

ive been using this inexpensive Ashconfish brand for over 5 years, I fish hard & never had an issue

Yes colour will fade, its braid just peel of faded or damaged line cut & with the extra line on your bulk spool

uni to uni some fresh 8 strand or splice 16 strand line as needed to top up your spool.

wetting down the bulk PE Braid spool before spooling reels will help keep a very tight line pack while spooling reels

Saturate Braid filled reel spool with CRC Silicone spray after spooling (Walmart automotive section, white can red writing)

tight Lines
