My first attempts at hog walleye... it's pretty exciting getting them to hit like lakers.

Was out on the the ice last week and had a blast. Remember to be extra careful on early ice. Floatation wear, ice picks, spud, packing light, bring a buddy, etc...all important.

#228115 Not a steelhead...but... look at the size of this thing!

Posted by frozenfire on 22 April 2012 - 12:57 AM

Went out to my favourite river today with a friend in hopes that the recent rain moved some fish around.
We hit quite a few small shakers, but this fish totally made the trip for me.
Notta_steeler... you'll appreciate this one :D

Posted Image

My float dropped quick on the hit. I set the hook into what I assumed to be a huge log hugging the bottom of the river. This log soon started to move and I finally realize there is actually a fish on the other end of my line.
The fight starts when the fish surfaces and realizes it's hooked. Was quite the battle. At first, I thought I had hooked into a carp, but was pleasantly surprised to see it was a beauty redhorse.
It blew my mind how big it was. Being used to the smaller size of the white sucker, this one just seemed gigantic.

#221595 Double-header weekend

Posted by frozenfire on 15 December 2011 - 12:10 AM

Despite the cold conditions, we did well for steelhead this past weekend. Took us a long time to find them, but when we finally found them... it was non-stop for a good while :D

Double-header from Saturday:

Double-header from Sunday:

The ones from Sunday are small, but double headers don't come by too often for me.
I find it rather hard to get another fish to hit when one fish is already thrashing about in the pool.

With that aside, I apologize for not being on the forum very often the last couple years. Sometimes, not logging on for months at a time.
In general, I'm just not actively checking forums and logging in as often as I used to.
I think it's time for me to drop the moderator role and have openfire give it to someone else who is able to contribute more to the forum.

#209140 A couple nice ones from this weekend

Posted by frozenfire on 08 December 2010 - 03:40 AM

It was a cold and snowy weekend, but still managed some nice fish.
Here's a couple that stood out.
Everything that touched the water froze almost instantly. Float, shots, line, hook, etc.
Shoreline is beginning to ice up. I wouldn't be surprised if pools end up completely iced over by this coming weekend.
Time to put the float rod and pin away.... and begin playing with the ice gear!

#208999 Night time steel

Posted by frozenfire on 01 December 2010 - 09:20 PM

This fall I started fishing at night for steelhead. With it getting dark so early with the time change, I'm forced to drift in the dark if I want to get out during the week.
The best part is that there is no one else around!
Who else fishes in the dark?

#208302 Trout Rod advice

Posted by frozenfire on 15 November 2010 - 02:39 PM

I'm not an expert, but it seems like you have it down FrankTheRabbit!

What size river are you fishing? From your description, it sounds like your 9'6" should be sufficient...but yes, a 13' will be better to keep your line off the water.
How much of a difference it would make? I'm not entirely sure.

You say you're casting only 6 ft in front of the fish... I would try starting your drift from a lot further away. Since you can see the fish, they can more than likely see you and are spooked already. The entry splash from your cast will spook them even more.
Try using 4lb flouro. It's what I've been using lately.

Your best bet is to go back to this pool after some rain when water level rises with good colour to it.
You won't see the fish, but hang on to your rod, cause you'll be fighting some fresh chrome in no time!

#200392 10 lb Rice Lake Bass

Posted by frozenfire on 15 July 2009 - 08:18 PM

I would say it's the same size as my personal best...
I didn't get exact weight measurement but many people who saw the pics i posted guessed from 5-7, so i say 6lbs.

#196804 Carp Fishing

Posted by frozenfire on 08 March 2009 - 08:31 PM

I believe the best time for carp is before and after their spawn in the spring. Once they go into spawn mode...they don't eat.
I wouldn't mind tackling a few carp...
I have accidentally snagged a few, and they sure can bring a fight!
