In Topic: TORONTO SPORTSMAN SHOW FEBRUARY 5-8, 2015

05 February 2015 - 05:05 AM

The shows are not just about tackle deals. Great informative seminars that you can pick up the odd tip from. The manufacturer booths are there and you can get excellent accurate advice personalized to your tackle questions. Own a Shimano reel and trying to decide whether to buy a Gloomis rod or a StCroix rod to pair it to. Both manufactures are there and can answer your questions as technical as you can make them. There are also fishing pros that attend that circulate around and you can meet and talk to. The fishing community as a whole are represented and its a chance to talk to them one on one. The MNR enforcement branch is there....I know you have questions and feedback for them. OMNRF are stocking brown trout in a new area in the GTA they haven't before learn about it. TRCA has done habitat and shoreline reconstruction in several areas this fall which will impact the species that use these areas...learn about it. There is a Recreational Fisheries Plan Meeting Feb 10 at the Ripleys Aquarium. Attend the show and read the plan before the meetings so that you have your questions ready for the speakers of the Feb 10 meeting. Being active in the fishing community puts the future of fishing in your hands rather than the politicians. Fishing was banned in the GTA in 2012 because we were not vigilant. Restoring fishing rights and removing the ban was a nightmare. Last week it was announced that it would be banned on a section of GTA tributary in 2016. TUFA / MNR and TRCA notified the politicians of their mistake and it was fixed before it was unfixable. To protect and better recreational fishing you need to be engaged in some manner. The forums are great but it does help to meet face to face a few times a year and share news , knowledge and experiences. Hope you will attend a show over the next two weeks and support the sport that you are so very passionate about.

anglers are stewards of their sport. if they want the fishing to be better they must practice conservation of the resources. do not mess with an ecosystem that has existed in these waters before man did. when you see violations such as the ones posted in the vid call your mnr enforcement officer and make a report...its the best thing you can do legally.  more violations that are reported = more enforcement officers required. maybe one of you get hired as one and do to the violators what we all are thinking should be done.

In Topic: FYI - There are no real fish in Ashbridges Bay / Tommy Thompson Park

06 September 2014 - 10:05 PM

Bottom feeders....I have caught bass, walleye, brown trout, perch, bowfin, blue gill, pumpkin seed, crappie all taking bait from the bottom. My knowledge of bottom feeders is to my advantage and opportunity.

Carp are my 2nd favourite fish to catch after bowfin. Very happy to know that most of you will not be competing with me for the opportunity to catch one. I really like fishing for suckers in the dead Don River too.

If I had to fish for bowfin, carp and suckers standing shoulder to shoulder along the banks of the rivers trying to fair fish for my catch while others illegally snagged them before me then I would be an angry angler too.

I would rather fish Toronto in my little spare time then wait to go outside the city fishing the three times I would get to otherwise. I have caught bigger and better fish in TO waters than anywhere else I have fished with the exception of walleye and muskie. I grew up in Peterborough and Ottawa....I would rather fish Toronto. Thanks to you for making the drive out of Toronto to fish!

I concur with Muskie Bait ....no fish along the shores of Toronto and GTA. I have been skunked 20 consecutive times fishing Toronto's shores in the past. Its hopeless! Its not me its the fish! There are none! Feel bad for me as I am a Toronto Urban Fishing Ambassador and I have no fish to be the Ambassador of. Not my job to prove to you there are fish where you do not want to believe there are. I would be wasting my time arguing with you when I could be fishing.

In Topic: What's up with the Humber River?

25 June 2014 - 01:04 PM

July 08 Canada's Rivers Day the DFO were conducting a sea lamprey testing to see if they can remove the old mill dam. The removal of that dam and a couple other obstacles might help. The Humber has had lower water levels as well the tree coverage along its shorelines have disappeared. This causes warmer water levels and less oxygen. The sewage treatment plant at the mouth of the Humber and the countless storm water runoffs into the river bring so much contaminants to the river. The extra water surges from the storm water runoff destroy the aquatic vegetation through erosion when we have big storms. The population that lives around the Humber River has grown exponentially and so has the pollution entering the waterway. More anglers removing more fish. Yes the loss of the fishery and its diversity is a crime.
