#236972 Bass roe

Posted by salmotrutta on 30 August 2012 - 12:46 PM

I thought it was interesting that a LMB I kept yesterday already was developing eggs:

After frying up this LMB and a walleye last night, I noticed that even at such a small size, a fishy taste is present in bass and missing completely in walleye. But the texture of the bass meat was more delicate and for my palate, preferable. I always add a little bit of lemon to bass, and indeed this is a good thing to do to ward off the fishy taste.

Was hoping to get a musky yesterday, after getting one of these on a dollarama spinner, and then subsequently catching many more on worms:

Will be trying later today. I've never targeted musky before, and the prospect of targeting a new species is exciting, even though I've caught so many pike.

This one's for you guys, Dugger & Fishnoob. Sorry but I am not just wearing socks in this one.

#229557 Went for any lost and last trout but...

A reminder of some of the rules pertaining to out of season fish.

Accidentally catching an OOS fish: legal.

Taking a picture with an OOS fish: legal (contrary to popular belief).

Retaining an OOS fish: illegal.

Continuing to fish the same location with the same bait, and continuing to catch OOS fish: illegal. You need to switch baits or move to another spot, if you keep catching them.

Intentionally targeting OOS fish: illegal (goes without saying).

You may wish to delete everything in your post after "but I could say that it was at least 7 pounds", to prevent arshlochs from going into a tizzy.

Enjoy watching them spawn at this time of year. It's fun to take a canoe or kayak out on Lake Erie and see huge bass spawning in numbers close to shore. Many tribs will have bass in them in June when the season opens. They're a real hoot to hook up with in rivers.

#225795 Summer Pics

Very nice catches in alot of those pics, gotta love the pike!!!!

So who all is from the Kitchener area? I'm by the Sunrise Centre (Ottawa & Fischer-Hallman area).. I've never really fished the Conestoga much, the odd time here and there, a buddy from work fishes by the dam in St.Jacobs religiously (mind you he does live there lol).. I usually fish the Bloomingdale ponds every week in the summer, but the Grand and Speed rivers in my old school growing up fishing days is an odd pike or carp trip I love, I know some big bass live in the Conestoga river also.

I'm seeing a road trip coming up, eventually lol.. Worshipping the Fish God's to bring good juju to the trip is a must lol

Is your buddy Kris? Used to see him there all the time if it's who I'm thinking, long haired guy that always wades out by the dam.

Spending time fishing that river in the summertime is soul food. With the Mennonite farmers around, you can't help but feel you've traveled back in time.

Nice pics Nado.

Conestogo River eh, thats my stomping ground. Do you fish there often?

That river will always hold an extremely special place in my heart! I can't believe how many good times were spent there. I was never really thrilled with my choice of university, that and 'x' number of weeks months years of celibacy can lead a man to start spending a lot of time fishing :-P

Fishing started for me in 2009 on that river. Other than the odd outing at friends' cottages as a kid.

My fishing story:

I wanted to spend a little quality time with my sis, so I decided to take her to watch the rainbow trout jumping and spawning that spring (on another body of water). I got a rod and license for the occasion, but did not know a single thing about how to use it. Summer of 2009 in Waterloo for school, having my own vehicle and a newly acquired rod and license, I began making the odd expedition around Mennonite country. I hit the jackpot July 11th with a nice pike out of St. Jacob's. Found some good pike spots, and ended up getting my first smallies and walleye too. The following spring I got really into trout. Thought I was done with fishing by the end of 2010, having caught most of the species, but one thing led to another and I ended up fishing a lot in 2011.

This pike ignited my passion and is responsible for countless km driven to various rivers, creeks and lakes throughout Ontario, but mostly the Conestogo River. I was there 2 to 3 times a day during the summer of 2009, if you fish there, there's a good chance we've met and talked ;)

If you have any pics from that river or surrounding ones please do post 'em up!

#215261 Port Credit: Salmon “pier” fishing tips for noobs

Posted by salmotrutta on 01 September 2011 - 01:21 AM

The problem with that is that its gonna drain your battery and eventually screw up your battery life...the original BB battery comes for around $70 + tax vs a flash that you can buy at bronte for $6 + tax...trust me on the battery thing, i know it from experience.

Glad I read this post, someone told me to download that app but it seemed silly. BB screen gives off enough light anyhow, if you're fumbling looking for the right key at night.

#205428 CAN WE EAT ONTARIO SALMON AND TROUT?

Posted by salmotrutta on 26 September 2010 - 11:35 PM

My personal favourite are headwater brown trout.

For the sake of the fishery, obviously don't make a habit of eating these, but if you target them for long enough you will inevitably go to release one that will not swim away. I have eaten brown trout and brook trout from headwaters, and I did not enjoy the brook trout very much. I found the brook trout difficult to fillet because the fish is quite tender. And the taste had absolutely nothing special to me.

Brown trout, on the other hand, were extremely delicate in taste, almost like a perch, and I would describe it as "no fishy taste".

For some reason, ~ 1lb bass taste great to me with a bit of lemon and they shouldn't be on the frying pan for any longer than they need to be.
