#212896 Rouge River

^^ Some valid points you got there however im pretty sure that all steelhead are repeat spawners... given the fact that they make it back to the lake. A good example of this is the fish that are tagged years ago and are still caught in the rivers during the spawning run. Now with that being said there are alot of factors that could lead to steelhead dying after spawning. The greatest threat to them is stress, and stress for steelhead come in MANY MANY ways. Water temp, fishing pressure, water levels, not enough food in the specific river system etc. All could add up and could lead to them dying. Just think how much energy they waste when spawning, they run miles up the rivers jumping obstacles and such never mind the stress that spawning itself brings onto them. There isnt a whole lot of food for them to regenerate energy in rivers as well. Truthfully fishing for them this late in the season in the temps we have arent really helping them either. Fighting a fish in warmer waters will tire it out way faster than if the water was still cold and if not properly released then they will certainly die. I tend to stop fishing for trout in rivers when its hot enough to wear shorts and a t shirt while fishing, try to give them a chance to get back to the lake so you can catch em when their heartier and stronger again.

Just my 2.

#209765 Credit River?

Posted by LICENSETOPIN on 15 January 2011 - 01:27 PM

me n a bud were both off and we decided to hit up the lower, i checked a couple
of forums for water conditions and all i got was iced up, or too slushy. iunno bout u guys
but almost every river ive ever fished in the winter has slush and ice flowing down it. so anyways
despite what ppl reported we headed out and lets just say i caught more fish going than not going.

guys the forums are great tool when it comes to planning a trip but dont let what ppl online turn u guys
away from ur fishermans instinct. honestly that was the first time ive hit up the wirlpool and we were the only
ones there for the WHOLE DAY minus some dog walkers. i guess everyone read the same reports online
and all decided to stay home while me n buddy went and gone fishing, sure beats sitting infront of the pc allday.

peace.

#208807 Steelhead jigs

Posted by efka on 26 November 2010 - 08:42 PM

here is a guide how to make your own trout jigs.
these are 3 types of trout jigs that most steelheaders use 85% of time, in different colors and sizes.

first is the famous woolly bugger.
if any fly fisherman would have to choose one fly, this would be it.
some tie it on a regular hook sliding the bead on it when fly fishing, i like it on the jig hook. why, it stays in horizontal position when i float fish.

Posted Image

attach the bead using a pin needle

Posted Image

some marabou to make a tail

Posted Image

now we tie in the hackle (i use grizzly sadle ) and chenille at the end

Posted Image

wrap the chenille towards the jig head and tie it

Posted Image

now do the same with the hackle
whip finish the jig, and add a drop of nail polish

marabou jig

pretty simple and effective jig

when tying marabou jigs, i don't wrap all the way to the end

Posted Image

apply some marabou, don't take too many marabou strungs as it will not hold as good as doing few at a time.

Posted Image

on this jig i will use 2 colours, it will be easier to see
try not to over do and make your jig too big

Posted Image

add few more strungs and whip finish

rabbit fur jigs

very simple and again effective for trout
can be tied in different colours

Posted Image

there are two kinds of rabbit stips that you can buy,
regular cut and cross cut.
i use crosscut, they hair will lay back after each wrap
regular or straight strips makes the jig look like a fur ball

attach the end of the strip and wrap your thread around to the jig head

Posted Image

when you reach the head give a couple of thread wraps, cut the strip and whip finish the jig

good luck
