going on a trip to north van...help

14 January 2013 - 01:54 AM

hey OFF,

i knows its ONTARIO fishing forums but im taking a trip to north vancover to visit the gf and will be there for 2 weeks. i figure i may as well bring the rod and try to get into some fish. only one problem, i have no idea what to expect. i know there are a couple rivers that are very close to her, capilano river being just down the street. but i have a lot of questions that im hoping everyone with any knowledge could help out.

what type of fish are in the rivers at this time of year? steel for sure, but anything else? im assuming the salmon run is over, maybe some cutthroats....am i missing anything?
what should i bring? obviously my rod, reel and all my tackle but waders, etc....is it possible to fish where i dont need to bring my waders?
holes to fish? lets be honest not like im going to have the time to scout out and do lots of leg work or at least a starting point.
has anyone travelled with all of their gear on a plane before? did they give you any trouble or any advice would be greatly appreciated.

anyways im not leaving for about 2 more weeks so i figured i should probably start to get everything ready. thanks in advance

half about my trip yesterday half about tip ups

11 January 2013 - 04:18 PM

Don't know how many people use them but I like em, always have 1 set up whenever I'm on the ice. yesterday I got into a nice perch bite, all with jigging, and had my tip up with a big old sucker hoping for a pike but no luck with the tip up. so today I started thinking...what if I set up a tip up to target perch and put 4 hooks(legal limit per line in Ontario) on my line all spaced out over 6-8 feet with small shiners/baitfish. has anyone done/heard of this? has it worked or not? any thoughts would be interesting and productive.

yesterday i caught 7- 6 perch and 1 pike.
