Try using drop shot baits with minnow profiles. A lot of people forget or just don't know that craws(huge source of river bass forage) shut down after a certain water temp and bass move onto different baits like minnows.

Hey OFF! So yesterday, last minute, a buddy of mine called me up and said the magic words. "Want to go fishing?" Immediately I told him to get his ass over to my house and bring his rods. WE ARE GOING TO SIMCOE! ahah. So me being stupid, I forgot to bring sunscreen, my cooler with water and food, a long sleeve light shirt, and of course the net! We headed up to Lefroy and rented a boat from Monto Reno Marina. 14 ft boat with a brand new yamaha 15hp on it. Let me tell ya that thing was sweet for some junk fishing! We were on the water for maybe lets say 6 hours and I had already gone through 3 packs of Zoom Trailer Chunks and 2 packs of senkos until I decided to take my friend to a very productive spot. First of all I wanted to make it clear to anyone here who has been told that you are fishing private property, you have every right to fish any bit of water as long as it is connected to the main lake, some people may put private property or no fishing signs, but by all means it is allowed to be fished unless somehow they have some rights to the water and they can prove that. I encourage anyone to be polite to the owners of cottages they fish near as we anglers need to be role models out on the water. That being said, my friend and I continued into the spot where I know I am fully in my rights to fish. Immediately we began to be pestered by a local. For a solid 15 minutes of me keeping my head down and watching my line, I finally got my first good bite in the spot. Out comes the first good bass! Right as I get mine in, my friend's line begins to take off without him even getting the chance to get the line tight. Out comes his PB bass. Overall it was a great day and Simcoe can still produce some great largemouth!

You want to hear about an off day! I took my brother out to pre fish Rice Lake for a tournament hes fishing in a couple weeks. We new the bass were deeper so I took him to an 8 foot weed line and tossed 7 inch senkos to locate the fish. Sure enough first cast, this beast jumped onto my brothers hook. Was an awesome fight!

Pwnisher pretty well described the type of hook you bought. It is just another way to help with the senko style or even swim bait style. I tend to just use a regular EWG hook.

I only use the LeBaron in Markham for line and smaller stuff that I don't pick up from Bass Pro. LeBaron is a great place with some great pricing most of the time.

All I know is, if someone wanted to learn something about fishing techniques, baits, structure, time of day, fish habits etc... I would be more than willing to share! it is not a secret and majority of the time, even if I tell you what to use, you STILL have to put the effort and trial and error factor into doing it right. I like telling people what types of gear I use in situations or what types of gear they may want to try for certain situations. Never such thing as too much info in fishing to give away. Everyone still learns and the waters always change.

you must be throlling with 65 Lbs. braided? On Tournament you will do almost everything to win, I can see all set ups with you there all prep, ready to launch ...

ya when im bass fishing in heavy cover i run heavy braid same as you 65lb, with a heavyish fluro. braid is like a knife when under tension it helps cut trough tall grass and slop. the trout guys wil tell ya all you need is 10lb mono and a UL rod. I mainly use heavy braid to prevent bedding on my caster, and no way am i going to use mono in cover 

Amen! Some people don't get it! I only use mono when I use jerk baits. But it is risky when fishing for bass where theres pike, have to play the game then!

I know I posted a few of those, where I told people what type of gear to use in certain situations. Don't know if lure did the same...

Thanks kleiner, I know theres a lot of great information for the river people but I want to make sure the other people coming to this forum don't just assume that is all the forum has to offer.

Hey guys, I get a lot of questions about how to get started bass fishing beyond the simple ugly stick and spinning reel combo. How do I prep to fish deeper water with cranks? How do I get fish out of the heavy cover? Realistically to anyone who is not as serious as I am or most others, there are 3 basic rods that you should look to invest and 3 reels along with them.

1. Start your journey with the purchase of a 6'10- 7 ft MH Fast Action Baitcaster. This will primarily be your jerkbait, spinnerbait, crankbait, lipless crankbait, and possibly some topwater plugs. Without breaking the bank you can aim to buy yourself a Mojo Bass St.Croix rod. They are not as expensive and if you can buy one used then you will pay a lot less. As for a reel, you can use anything from a 4.7:1 - 5.5:1(the bass pro qualifier reel is great for the price and I would load it up with suffix siege clear mono line)

2. I also recommend getting a nice spinning rod 6'8 or 7'2 Extra Fast Action. This can be your rod for tossing wacky senkos, tubes, drop shot, finesse shaky heads. For this situation I love pairing up a shimano Crucial with an Abu Garcia reel. The Crucial is great but only if you buy it used, do not pay retail for it. If you have the extra cash to spend on a reel, the Abu Garcia Revo SX spinning reel is amazing! Suggested on my end.

3. Now the fun part. I am a big fan of flipping a jig into that cover, or punching a tungsten skirted weight with a creature bait on the hook. If you really do not want to spend too much money, the Abu Garcia Veritas 7 ft Heavy Fast Action rod is a great start. For 79.99 they are very reasonable. Again if you can find it used BUY IT. I am sure you can snag one for 50 bucks. Make sure that the baitcaster you pair it with has a ratio of 7.1:1 at least.

These are the basic 3. You do not need to spend over 500 bucks on all sorts of rod and reels and different baits. You can easily fish a full day on the lake with these 3 types of set ups. Now if you have money and are willing to get yourself a full arsenal then I support you!
