#333940 What Kind Of Fish Is This?

Posted by MuskieBait on 17 June 2016 - 10:02 AM

Gizzard Shad for sure. If you look closely, you can see the thin filament on that dorsal fin (like the filament in Tarpon). The dorsal fin is also above the pelvic fins in the Gizzard Shad as it is for your fish.

In Mooneye, the dorsal fin is set further back and it is positioned above the anal fin. Mooneye also does not have that dorsal filament.

#326533 Heat Wave

when it gets hot they move to deeper cooler water, but my way of thinking is that, the salmon know they need to make a run now, and its not getting any cooler, so their going to take a chance at even the slightest of temp drops because they don't know if they will get another window. And angle of retrieve doesn't really matter, the reason the boat guys are getting more lick is because they are in the deeper, cooler water, where the fish are.

I don't think that's the case. That's the primary reason why Salmons get early or get late. It's not about urgency....they rely on instinct. If they sense when it is ideal..they will move up. Those that are already in the initial run or trickle...will look for deeper pools and probably have spawned already. They don't swim back. I've seen most of them under trees...and already dark.

#325499 Baitcaster rod with spinning reel

Posted by Paulie on 16 July 2015 - 12:03 AM

I think you'd might as well tape your spinning reel to a branch rather than use a baitcaster rod with it. Lol

Like others have said just keep practicing with the baitcaster, once you get the hang of it, it's well worth it.

When I was first learning some of the tips I used were set the break to max, use a heavier lure (make sure to adjust spool tension knob to suit the weight of the lure), and always keep your thumb on the spool (lightly). This will stop most birdsnests. Once you get a feel for your baitcaster you'll know when to take your thumb off or apply pressure (if you time it right apply pressure to the spool just before the lure hits the water). As you get better you can set the brake to lighter.

Once you get the hang of it you'll love it. The accuracy and distance you can cast is just amazing. Not too mention the power in it when your reeling in a lunker. Quite a different feeling than a spinning rod.

#318496 shift vs raw 2

Posted by classic drifter on 25 October 2014 - 02:03 PM

every reel has somewhat of an issue or something most people would not find comfortable to fish with. for me im a rapala fan, between me and my brother we have all the 3 models to choose from. sure enough the rtype is your entry level reel, your basic centerpin reel does the job and handles quite well. IMO its a bit heavier and could use a little bit of fine tuning like the placements of the handle. and the startup is somewhat below average IMO. the classic drifter which i started fishing with is very solid reel IMHO. smoother action than the Rtype for sure, a bit lighter and a little bigger spool. handle placements were ideal for beginners. fingers dont get caught quite easily. startup is quite average. but the biggest downside i noticed with the reel, is trying to stop it with slightly wet fingers. for whatever reason the coating on them gets slippery when wet. LOL! for the price and how the reel performs i was pretty happy with it since i dont know how to pin at all. i owe this reel most of my knowledge so far. and finally there is the Shift excellent reel IMHO. large spool, lightweight. offset for a little bit better balance. i find the spool size very good specially on longer drifts as it takes fewer turns to retrieve your line from the tailout on bigger pools. startup is above average ( lower inertia startup ). the biggest hurdle i had trying to learn how to fish with this reel is the positioning of the handle as i was so used to putting my finger on the face side of the reel (as opposed to the classic drifter). couldnt do it with this one so i have to teach my fingers to brake the spool from about 1/8 of an inch which is basically the lip of the spool itself and not get my fingers caught. with a few outings i was okay with the reel. handled boots in the rain with it a few weeks back and unlike the classic drifter the coating on this stays relatively grippy. as if it was dry. thats what i can say about the rapalas. remember this is from my point of view and my opinions on the reels mentioned above. everybodys style and preferences are different so i just want to share you my thoughts. the way i look at it its like buying a car, one car is basic and will take you from point A to B price of the car is 15 grand brand new. on the other hand we have a luxury car which will take you from point A to B as well. price is 50 grand but it will have alot more features, toys and more importantly horsepower (yeah!!!) you get my point! hope my 2 cents ease up on the decision making. i dont own a raw II so i couldnt say anything about it. i see alot of people have it though

#315313 dont fish near my dock

Posted by Dave Bailey on 08 September 2014 - 11:25 AM

From the Federal Fish and Wildlife Act, 1997:

Fish & Wildlife Act 1997

Obstruction of hunting, trapping or fishing

13. (1) A person shall not interfere with lawful hunting, trapping or fishing by,

a) tampering with traps, nets, bait, firearms or any other thing used for hunting, trapping or fishing;

b )placing himself or herself in a position, for the purpose of interfering, that hinders or prevents hunting, trapping or fishing; or

c) engaging in an activity, for the purpose of interfering, that disturbs or is likely to disturb wildlife or fish.

Notice without authority

(2) A person shall not purport to give notice that entry to premises is prohibited for the purpose of hunting or fishing or that hunting or fishing is prohibited on premises unless the person has authority to give the notice. 1997, c. 41, s. 13.

I have three copies of that printed out, and carry them in a waterproof sandwich bag. If anyone ever tries to prevent me from legally fishing a copy will be handed to them. Haven't had to use one yet, fortunately. What he was doing was absolutely illegal.

I assume police? Are you guys allowed to enforce the conservation act and fishing regs?

Yes we are. It's written into the fish and wildlife conservation act that we are Co's as mentioned in the act.

Frankly I have worked 11 years in an urban environment so the intricacies of the act I do not know. Just the major / common offences.

I have no issues in confronting people when they're doing something blatant and have done it in the past.

#313328 ***Early August Salmon Run Confirmed***

Posted by rybak on 07 August 2014 - 09:51 AM

how do you charge your spoons? We were messing around with flashlights last night and it sucked. I am going to go buy one of those rapala glow boxes I think

I have just tested three glow lures: blue-white Little Cleo, green-white Gibbs and red-white 'More Silda'. I was test charging them with a regular LED headlamp. 9 led lights running off of 3 AAA batteries.

I did a test for maximum glow and glow retention. Each time, lure received a bit over 5 seconds of light.

Little cleo had brightest initial shine, followed by MoreSilda and then GIbbs. MoreSilda looked the most natural whereas Little Cleo looked like a radioactive fish. Gibbs lure was dim, but it was good enough. All lures were visible in pitch dark from 40 feet. Little Cleo was probably visible from the other side of the street :)

Now, glow retention -

Gibbs lost glow the fastest. At around 3 minutes it was visible, but just barely. Little Cleo lost glow second fastest as it began at the highest peak initial glow, although it was still visible after 7 minutes. MoreSilda retained the some glow the longest and seemed rate of loss was more-less constant.

Verdict, in murky water I will probably go with Cleo or MoreSilda. In clear water, any three will do. No idea if it helps, but that's my anecdotal evidence :)
