#275587 are salmon within casting distance yet?

yeah I was gunna say its almost the exact same as a potato gun. We tried to make ours with the hairspray design and not the compressed air one.

We couldent get it to fire and decided to try acetylene instead and exploded the entire thing. That was the end of that.

#274234 Smokers handling lures

Meh maybe a bit over the top. I use gloves when tying roe bags and leaders for trout sometimes but that's it. I think the human cent and whatever else your tackle is exposed to could have more of an impact. I know for me personally its more of a problem burning my hands when I let it burn to long while fishing or not being able to pull the smoke outa my mouth because I am busy with both hands. I have also unwittingly cut my line a few times while not paying attention to where my line was. I have had the same problem as Alfie as well.

Often after a time fishing hard I decide to sorta take a break (line stays in the water but Im not going as hard) have a smoke and possible rethink my approach or something. This is often the time a strike happens and sometimes I miss it. I often find myself furiously trying to spit out a but that stuck to my lips while attempting to bring in a fish.

#272256 The Joy of Not Fishing

Posted by DitchWizard on 05 June 2013 - 03:28 PM

Sad...

I belive that many of the past turditions of fishiing are still around and strong to this day. Things like keeping whatever comes out of the water, mishandling fish and grabbing fish like pike by the eyes (kills them slowly by pushing the optic nerve into the brain). People just don't realize the harm to a fishery caused by a bit of old fashioned fishing. Its the way they have always done it.

As a young angler I find myself stepping away from some of the old methods of the past and my fathers generation. I think that it's the responsibility of conservation minded anglers to spread the word. Its been proven time and time again in the past that overfishing leads to collapses in population numbers, it's simple math.

It seems to be some people instincts to just keep a fish they catch regardless of if they are going to eat it or enjoy it. I guess some people like to eat fish but like many I just like the fishing and if passing on some fish dinners enables me to continue fishing then I will be happy to comply. I don't drive hours to go stand by a river, sit on the ice or drive around in a boat for 12 hours for dinner. I would just go to work and buy some food  . I sometimes suggest that people who want to eat some fish stop by the supermarket and pick up a sustainably raised fish instead of taking a natural one. 5 or 10 bucks for a fish certainly dwindles the big bucks some of us blow on equipment and gear.

I belive its up to the next generation fishing to teach others a sustainable way of fishing so we will all have fish in the future.

Very well put Dugger! Did you say you were a journalist at one point? Your writing is excellent IMO.

I really enjoy how on here we can so often discuss topics that could be catagorized under controversial in a level headed manner. So often I see discussions other places on touchy subjects digress into personal attacks and slander, I don't see it here as much. we must have a mature crowd around here or something.....

So there's a picture of a fish floating around in cyber space...I'm not sure how that is going to effect your life in the futur.

I don't think many people here are looking for validation for their pictures and fishing. More like sharing pictures with like minded anglers and friends. I really enjoy a fishing report with pictures, its a nice way of sharing. Much like sharing the fun of a catch on the river with a buddy.

#261385 Experimental Lake Trout Jig

Posted by DitchWizard on 06 February 2013 - 02:23 PM

It should be a killer. Just don't come back and tell us that you really killed them. Having being skunked in every ice outing this year would make me envious :-(...JK

Just keep at it you will get into some fish, if you get sick of skunks just head out for some perch.

Sometimes I don't even mind a skunking on the ice I just chill in the hut, cook up some sausages n bacon, smoke darts and listen to Howard stern and slam pints if I'm not driving lol
