If you still have thread breaking issues, remember that as you wind your thread around the shank, it's also twisting. If you allow this to build up, the thread just breaks. If you look at the thread you will see the twists. This is easy to avoid, every so often just allow the bobbin to free hang a bit. It will start to unwind, you can help it along if you want. When the thread looks even again, carry on. Problem solved.

I like the pattern you tied. Looking at the photo, it seems your intent is to have the fly present hook down, as you show it. But it looks like you tied the dumbbell on top of the shank. I would worry that with the dumbbell eyes tied on top of the shank, their weight may flip your fly upside down. Of course if the hook bend and point are heavy enough it may not happen. You might want to try to place the dumbells under the shank and avoid the issue. Alternately, you could position it as is and dress your fly hook up, thus making it snagless.

If you're looking at a Butterstick, then you might want to check out the Echo fibreglass options. A 5 or 6 for sure. But since your looking for a streamer rod with length the Echo fibreglass 4wt switch rod (equivalent to a 5-6 single hand) might be a lot of fun.

While all those are excellent stores, I wasn't aware that they offered a no charge borrow policy. Where, when weather permits, you can go down to the local river and try a few heads. That way you can pick what feels best to you.
