Personal Success Story

18 August 2015 - 12:28 AM

Hey everybody,

I just wanted to make a post about a personal success story of mine.

My family recently rented a cottage on a lake that I have never been to before. I had at my disposal a canoe and a kayak that the renters provided. Armed with all of the fishing knowledge that I have managed to accumulate over the past four years, I threw myself headfirst in exploring this lake and trying to find where the fish were. I actually managed to have a lot of success!  I caught my PB best large mouth bass and never went a day without catching at least five bass!

This might not seem like a huge accomplishment, but it sure felt like one for me. Over the past couple of years, since I began seriously fishing and taking a very active approach in learning as many techniques as I could and learning as much about fishing I could, I was really proud of myself. This trip was the first time that I had a lot of success throwing a square bill crankbait, a jerkbait, a drop shot rig and wacky worms. Previously, I tried my luck with all these techniques and had little to show for it other than the occasional fish. But I stuck to it and it produced. I spent a lot of time looking over the lake for potential fish holes and devising plans of what lures I should throw where.

This trip was a huge moral booster for me and an important step in my journey as a fisherman. I would like to throw this as an inspiration to all the budding anglers out there that are just learning how to fish: be diligent and try to learn as much as you can about the sport. Don't be complacent with only the techniques you know work, but keep trying new things and learn from you successes and your failures. I am excited to try these techniques on more pressured waters now and see just how much I have progressed.

Anyways, I hope this was a helpful post. The lake that I was on was relatively small and shallow, which was perfect for me, as it was manageable to explore it and to functionally fish it without a sonar. I would love to talk more about myexperiences and if anyone has any questions, I would love to help! If anyone is interested about what lake it was, send me a private message so that you can explore it and maybe rent a cottage as well!

Thanks,

Mimico and Etobicoke Creek

12 June 2015 - 01:08 PM

Hi Everyone,

I would just like to pose a quick question, does anyone know if there are any fish and what kind, can be found in Mimico and Etobicoke Creeks? I went for a short little hike around Mimico Creek at Bloor Street and it looks gorgeous! Definitely the kind of place I would love to wade, explore and fish!

I was wondering what kind of fish are found there? I don't need to know exact locations or anything (it's close enough that I can explore it on my own), just a general idea of what can be found in there. PM if you do not want to give anything away, but I'm just curious if there is anything there worth wetting a line. Of course, it looks so nice, I don't think I would mind getting skunked all the time

Anyways, any info is appreciated! Even a website would be of service, I was having a rough time finding anything on the internet about it.

Cheers!

Carp Quandry

05 June 2015 - 01:49 PM

Hey everyone,

So yesterday, I took a quick two hours on the way home from work to go fishing at Humber Bay Park. This was my first visit there and I was so impressed when I arrived in the east park: minnows all across the eastern pond, and in the western pond, I saw tons of carp moving around! I can not convey how excited I was, quickly rigging up the fastest hair rig I ever have and throwing my line toward the carp I could clearly see. I ended up going home skunked.

I do not understand why though. I was using a method feeder and a hair rig with corn on it. I tried popup corn, but when that did not worked, I let it rest on the bottom. I cast to the carp and saw them swinging around my bait, but there were no takes. I chummed to them, but all that did was feed the ducks. I do not understand why I went home empty handed.

A few notes about the evening:

- My  hair rig was really short, about a nine inches. Was that the problem?

- The carp were gulping at the surface every so often and there seemed to be a lot of bugs around.

- They were moving around and were splashing in schools. Were they spawning?

- I fished in a pond, in a smaller contained bay where I saw the majority of the movement. To my left was more open water.

- Some were kicking up some mud, but I did not see many. They were more to my left, but I cast there and my bait went untoched for half an hour.

So what went wrong? Did I spook them? Was I in the wrong place? Or were they only focused on sipping flies of the surface and ignoring anything else? Or was there something else that went wrong?

The carp are clearly there in numbers so I do plan on going again, but I would like to know for next time and know just in general. Always helps when you know as much as you can about fish behaviour.

Fly Fishing Trip Advice

21 May 2015 - 09:10 PM

Hey guys,

I am going to head out on a fishing trip this Sunday and I was hoping for some insight for location.

I have never caught a trout on my 5WT fly rod and am eager to hook into something. I plan on throwing an olive and black woolly bugger and a hare's ear nymph, unless there is an evident hatch happening.

I am not looking for any specific locations, just a little insider info for the quality of the streams and possible access points to begin my own personal exploration. Any tips would be appreciated, even tackle tips.

Thank you all, I will post my results.

My Surprising Catch

03 May 2015 - 11:47 AM

I went for a round of night fishing with my friends last night. We hooked into some channel cats at the dam above Dunnville and then moved locations to the Caledonia dam later in the night. We hooked into some more channel cats, with a bullhead and a sucker for a little diversity.

But when I was reeling in my line to check on the minnow, I think I got the biggest surprise of my fishing career when I noticed a long, thin, dark and slimy shape hanging on to my hook. I moved it over shore and it plopped off and under further investigation, I caught a salalmander! That was a nice little surprise to liven up my night and one of the weirdest things that has ever graced my lines.
