In Topic: Someone tied up a crayfish with a line?

Sure hope it wasn't on purpose. Good for you for taking the time!

I worry about all the line I see tying things up, even in remote streams. I read last year that it's thought it'll take 600 years for all that lost mono & other plastic line to break down once it gets into water.

Thanks for the responses. It was a dumb thing to do, I'd had a hell of a morning with the sewage line backing up in the basement of our building that morning and it seems I was worn out. Anyway, I have some hope that a fellow I speak to from time to time named Tim might track the thing down as he knows some fellows who fish around there in the night.

The fishing's fairly good, for Toronto's waterfront. I mostly go to give my son something to catch, he pulls out panfish, perch, and young bass. Being eight and possibly a bit OCD he counts everything, and informed me that he'd caught some twenty of the things one session about three weeks ago. However, there's at least one fellow who hauls out absolutely everything he catches, in a bucket, even panfish that wouldn't cover a drinking cup. It's had an impact, there are far fewer fish milling about these days. That said, back in March I believe I spotted some trout in that pond, and I certainly saw some at the floating bridge further into the park as late as early July.

I find I'm able to get along fine with birders. I'll point out the species I've seen, and like to hear about the different species that are making a comeback. And I certain share their concerns about the dog walkers letting their animals roam everywhere. Last weekend some yachters let their dogs free where a pair of swans have a nest at the Ashbridges marina, and where a crane frequently spends its evenings. It's maddening. And in Tommy Thompson, a lot of the garbage that hasn't obviously come across from the city is dumped by people there to fish. I took my son down to catch some panfish etc at Embayment D yesterday and today, and both times wound up packing out someone else's beer cans, water bottles, tackle packaging, broken lures, worm containers, and line, line, line. I commend TUFA, I think they're tacking a very constructive approach.

In Topic: is this a chain pickerel (caught in Toronto)

Wow, thanks for the information, everyone. MuskieBait, you went above and beyond. m(-_-)m

I like the idea of local variations, that jibes with what I've seen in different waters. That's what I originally thought when we plucked this out of the water. I saw what I took to be a large sculpin off the second point at Ashbridge's Bay last week, but it was a curious blue color. Since this pike(?) remains the only non-goby I've caught in dozens of outings on the city's waterfront, it came to mind when I read that the chain pickerel was turning up, here.

Thanks for the quick responses. I found the pattern striking, too - this pic by my then seven year old has been the wallpaper on my phone ever since. If it is a chain pickerel, they're a welcome addition to these waters. Given that they're a smaller breed of pike, I wonder if they're drawn to the super abundance of round gobies.

Fiesty fish, I have to say. I actually saw it hit the lure, it really threw everything it had at the thing.
