In Topic: Fishhook removal trick

20 October 2019 - 10:17 AM

Thanks for sharing. I have personally used this technique twice on fellow anglers who hooked themselves while fly fishing. One on the Credit and another at St Mary’s Rapids........However, with one difference. Instead of pulling on the eye of the hook, just press the eye down against the skin. A quick tug will release the hook, without the barb catching on the way out. Both “patients” were amazed how easily and painlessly it worked. Pushing on the eye, elongates the wound/entry point, meaning the barb is “clear”, and hook will exit cleanly. From the video, it looked like there was some resistance before the hooked exited.

Small print.......when in doubt, get a doctor to remove it😉

You sound like me 5 years ago.....until I discovered Steelhead. Sept 30 is now the “new” beginning. Don’t be put off by the circus at the most popular/assessable locations, although there are some legit anglers and it could be an opportunity to watch and learn. There is quieter water if you do your homework.

Unless it has any obvious visual defects, I would assume it’s good to go. Check the guides and the tip, ensure they are smooth and have no corrosion. Check the ferrules have a good fit. Take it outside and give it a few casts.

Thanks for reminding me why I haven’t fished there in over 30 years. Legal or not, it’s a s**t show. Sad.
